On January 20th, 2007 according to IGN reporting on Famitsu data and our own Vgchartz Japan Weekly Preview data Wii hardware sales passed 5.0 million units in sixty weeks of sales - which makes Wii the quickest console to reach 5.0 million units in Japan since at least 1990.
------
That is an average of just over 80,000 Wii sold per week in Japan. To understand the magnitude of that accomplishment, I have assembled historical lifetime sales numbers for Japanese platforms at week sixty.
By reaching over 5 million on January 20th, 2008 only 60 weeks after launch, Wii has reversed the trend of falling sales for successive Nintendo consoles in Japan. Sixty weeks into their respective launches, Gamecube had sold 1.68 million units, while Nintendo 64 had sold 2.31 million units neither console ever hit 6.0 million units sold in Japan. The SNES, a much more successful Nintendo console in Japan went onto sell roughly 17 million units in Japan, after hitting 3.59 million units sold in week sixty. The NES, which sold more than SNES - is said to have had a weak launch relative to its eventual total sales, but reliable weekly data for the console does not exist in Japan for that early timeframe in industry history.
Within this generation, PS3 (which launched in November 2006 in Japan) was at 1.69 million units 60 weeks into its launch, while the Xbox 360 (which launched in 2005) was at about 330,000 units sold lifetime.
Playstation 2, sixty weeks into Japanese launch was at 4.31 million units, while PS1 at sixty weeks into its Japanese launch was at 1.90 million units. Compared to portables, Wii is trailing DS at its week sixty by about 800,000 units, but Wii is outpacing PSP by about 2.0 million units at week sixty.

Correction, first *NINTENDO* *HOME* console to hit 5 million in Japan since 1990.
In fact, the DS even reached 5 million in a shorter time than the wii...think it was something like 56 weeks.

SNES, as sirJoshizzle says, sold roughly 17 million in Japan.
well, that wouldn't have been the SNES actually, that doesn't even exist in Japan, it would've been the super Famicom
