you guys seem to think that im anti charity and think that we should do nothing to save the world. this isn't true, i'm not. i'm critisizing the military action that invisible children advocates, and i am saying that that invisible children are not the best charity, and other charities should have the dosh. so instead of whipping out the inspirational quotes, why not actually read my arguments

It is good to see you, Jared. Pretty sure I saw Fort posting new threads, too. All these Hnet members coming out of the woodwork, yay.

Peace in central africa will not be catalyzed by bringing in a squidding army, contrary to popular belief. Its like the situation in iraq, where yes, there was a bad guy, but there was absolutely no need for the US to wave their military wang around and intervene. if the US gets involved, things will escalate. Like I said earlier, the solution is humanitarian not military.

Basically IC want to arm and supply the Ugandan army, which is notorious for rape, pillage and setting up prostitution rings. They're no better than the LRA, to be honest. And plus, the LRA are in DRC now, and if Uganda stepped on the toes of the DRC, there would be a big ass war. The last time Uganda was in a war with the DRC, the deadliest war since WWII was started. So yeah, maybe that isn't a very good idea.

Yeah, awareness is good, but not when you're spreading missinformation, which is what IC are doing. The numbers are exagerated and it provides the situation in a very black and white way, that we need to march our army into Uganda, shoot the baddies, then go home. This is NOT how to achieve peace, by initiating another war.

Sure, some action is better than no action, but IC support unrealistic military solutions to a humanitarian problem. IC are fundamentally good, but they're short sighted and the charity money would be better spent on a charity that provides aid, not funding an army that commits equal crimes to the LRA.

Kony definitely needs to be stopped though. It's not black and white, but it's definitely black and something else. And I suppose that something else is the closest we'll get to white though. The video didn't make out the military to be this perfect being that stops evil. It did go into why someone like Kony is so difficult to get rid of from a military perspective. It noted the flaws in society and the system that make it such a tough situation to handle. That being that the military wont act unless the government say so, and they wont make the orders like this unless society wants them to, and society wont want them to if they don't know that it's happening.

So by spreading the video, you spread awareness for the cause. By spreading awareness, you make people rally together to get the government to do something. The government make the orders, the military goes out, and Kony can be stopped.

The only way to get the world's attention for long enough to stop Kony is to shove it in everyone's faces. Indifference would totally destroy the whole thing, none of the other steps could proceed without the public's attention. Not with the politics of it all.

People aren't as realistically thinking as others. They get over excited about any input they make. But as long as they know what they're raising awareness for, which some probably wont, then there isn't really anything to fault. And even then, as long as people aren't allowed to forget it and the job gets done, is there really anything to complain about?

I suppose you're just angry at people who follow these sorts of things like a fashion trend. I'm with you on that, but since there's nothing damaging about their behaviour that I can think of, I see no reason to complain about them.

Also I'm not going to debate what Kony are doing. I'm looking at the response side of things. I don't know much about what they do, only what they're trying to achieve.
And yeah it's ignorant of me to follow them based on their goals, but I find it hard to believe that they're some big evil organisation.

End: I hope Kony 2012 doesn't destroy the world.

Oh, if only I was as cynical as you. The world might be a better place, where sarcasm replaces charity, because "no one can give selflessly" and "you aren't really doing any good, you know? You aren't really making a difference. You shouldn't feel good about yourself."

You don't have to support this particular movement, or any movement, whatever. But God forbid some lazy Americans try to spread goodwill through their facebook instead of racial, gender, or sexual orientation slurs.

God forbid anyone try to do anything at all.

It's okay to be cynical. I'm not saying your viewpoint is "wrong" or anything. Just keep in mind that, if everyone had the attitude that you have, nothing good would ever get done. No one would donate to charity because it's impossible to do so out of the kindness of your heart, and even if it is out of the kindness of your heart, it's going to a corrupt and inconsistent system.

Before status updates and picture threads, folks had to make new threads for the most minute things. So it looked like we were always busy, even if the threads often died. And new users would actually come here.

That being said, new users tend to not come here. Jared thinks the "quilt of friendship" is deteriorating. It's more that the quilt is too strong. I haven't seen a new face that's stuck around since Cascade. I'm really getting less and less tolerant of people scaring away new members or just generally being abrasive when they do come around expecting at least Zelda Fans, when even those who like or have played Zelda games will tell them straight up that they don't like the series, whether it be for a reaction or to avoid discussing it at all. What kind of progress as a forum can we make with an attitude like that?

When Dustin was the owner, he made every effort to load Hnet up with a bunch of features, whether they were used or not, and he tried really hard to get a lot of users. We'd get people of all kinds of demographics, and since even the people that stayed here didn't have any social standing, no one shut anyone else out and we adapted to and accepted different ways of thinking, even if they were less tolerable than others. Now we're just a clique made up of smaller cliques. I haven't seen very many warm, nice welcomes from a large majority of you in awhile. Mostly just one line comments that don't make sense in context for the newcomer and just general being a jerk.

Yeah, Link was a bit of a jerk in the cartoon series, but that show's a guilty pleasure of mine. Actually, I think doing an Hnet stream of it with commentary could be entertaining. Possible drinking game for those of age: every time you hear an "Excuuuse me, princess", or whenever they almost kiss, but then something interrupts them.

More in the art threads would be nice. Speaking of which, if I get back into beading I should start posting more of my stuff. Last time I tested the macro settings on my phone camera I got decent results.

But back to the Tim Burton thing, sometimes he's okay, but his films can be seriously flawed. I didn't mind Charlie and the Chocolate Factory so some extent. Some parts in the TB version were closer to the book, like the Oompa-Loompa songs, and the factory itself looked more like how I imagined it. (e.g. The chocolate waterfall actually looks like chocolate and not brown water). But overall I liked Gene Wilder's Wonka better than Johnny Depp's version, which annoyed me because it was all "Look at me! I'm so quirky and craaaazy!"

The Nightmare Before Christmas was just as a Henry Selick project, but people seem to forget that because of the way it's been promoted. Selick directed it, and co-wrote it with Tim Burton who produced it, but it's constantly touted as Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas. Not saying Selick is anywhere close to perfect, but watch Coraline and just try telling me he had less to do with Nightmare than Tim Burton did.

I enjoyed Sweeney Todd for the most part. As much as Sondheim scores are difficult, I thought most of the cast handled it pretty well (though the smaller cast roles like Johanna and Tobias really stood out for me). However Mrs. Lovett should have been played by someone with a better singing ability than Helena Bonham Carter. I think Burton's nepotism and wanting to see his wife in yet another corseted crazy role got in the way of that.

If anything Alice In Wonderland should have worked because Tim Burton's good at making visually stunning works that don't make a lot of sense, and Alice's world is supposed to be chaotic and nonsensical, more about individual scenes than any overall story arc. If they hadn't tried to tie everything into an epic storyline it might have been fine.

I think my annoyance with Tim Burton is that I've seen him do good stuff sometimes, but it's when he gets too seIf-indulgent that I can't stand him
