This being the Game Development forum, I was surprised at the lack of RPG Maker games/threads here.

RPG Maker XP (2004)
RPG Maker VX (2007)

RPG Maker is a neat piece of software created by Enterbrain, inc. (Better known for the Japanese gaming magazine, Famitsu) that allows people with no programming knowledge to design simple RPGs from scratch. The RPG Maker programs feature a simple drag & drop interface that is easy to use, and with a lot of work, can produce decent games. The most recent titles, RPG Maker VX and RPG Maker XP are localized and available for purchase from Enterbrain's website for $60, although there is also a trial option if you want to check them out. (XP is the superior version, in my opinion)

For those of us with shallower pockets, however, there is the older RPG Maker 2000 and it's upgraded version RPG Maker 2003 available for download here. Both of these never left the shores of Japan, and are available thanks to dedicated fans who translated the whole thing from Japanese into English. 2k/3 does not support outside scripting, unlike XP and VX, so you're stuck with the tools that come packaged with it, (and the Final Fantasy 4 esque Active Time Battle System) although you can add your own graphics and sounds. 2k/3 also only supports SNES/GBA style graphics and resolution, unlike XP and VX, which support higher resolution graphics. Even with these restrictions, there are plenty of premade sprites, music, enemies and items to get you started on your own RPG!

Here are a few screenshots of each version:

And to top of the cake, here are some resources where you can find extra resources:

RMXP Unlimited: The Official RM community run by Enterbrain. There are tons of resources and scripts for RPG Maker XP and VX.
RPG Revolution: A resource website with resources for RPG Maker XP, VX and 2k/3.
RPG Maker Resource Kit: A nice website with plenty of resources for RPG Maker XP, VX and 2k/3. In their forums are also downloads for mods to add a little more freedom.
Charas: The best website for RPG Maker 2k/3 resources. There are tons to sift through, but the best part is the "Charas Generators," where you can make your own sprites out of bits and pieces submitted by users.

If I forgot anything, please post it :) I also know quite a bit about RPG Maker 2003 so you can also ask questions if you haven't used it before.

Yes, XP is the definitive version in my opinion.

On a side note, Enterbrain are releasing RPG Maker DS in japan, which lets you share your games through the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection. Although in all likelihood it will not come out in the US, I suppose we can dream, right?

Aha. I used to have experience in such things. I loved VX for it's random dungeon generator and the default faces on the menu screen. Hated the rest of VX, however. (I did kinda like the quick chest/door creation). My favorite was XP, mainly because the RGSS for that was what I was skilled with as opposed to RGSS2.

However, my game creation was a failure, simply because I could not put the effort into it alone. So I gave up. I wasn't completely good with mapping either, however, I did improve.

I for one, would've always liked to see game projects in developement on here. Even if RMXP is a bit restricting at times.

Yeah, I always appreciated VX for it's user-friendliness, but I found it much more limiting than XP, and the included sprites were butt ugly compared with XP (save the portraits.) As much as I liked XP though, I'm a cheap ass and used the *cough* illegitimate *cough* version for a little while, although I switched to 2003 since the XP fan translation doesn't work with Vista. I was actually proud of what I pulled off in 2003 but I ultimately quit due to the massive effort you need to put in if you really want to make a decent game.

How do you make a new map in the same game on XP?

If I remember correctly, you right click on the map list box and select "new map," which brings up the map creation window.

Do any of you guys know if they've got a version of RPG Maker available to put on Homebrewed Wii's? I found this cool Chrono Trigger fan game I wanna play but I don't wanna have to play it on my PC... it belongs on my TV :P

I personally prefer coding my own games. You get to do whatever you darn well want to do.

^ You get a lot of flexibility when you know how to use the language well, and it provides a starting point for people who don't know how to code.

Hmm, would anyone be interested in helping me with my game? I'm using RPG Maker XP. It's a really stupid idea that I can't pass up.

An LoZ fan RPG, with GBC graphics. Link won't be the sole hero of this game, instead he'll be the leader of a party consiting of many characters from many races. Also, there will be lots of famous LoZ baddies.

I'd need help with:

Scripting (Also, if anyone knows of a newbie tutorial, that'd be cool)
Sprites (I'll need some custom sprites in GCB style. I suck at spriting, for the most part)
Some help with extra stuff, like story ideas and number help (stats mainly)

If anyone is interested, then I'll make a thread. (Though, I doubt anyone will be)

I don't own or have much experience with XP, sowwy : (

But if you ever use 2003 I'm pro at using that.
