A riddle!

Ok, I got a riddle from my teacher, but I haven't been able to solve it for the last two weeks. So here goes:

There were two twin girls named Mary and Kate, born on the same day of the same hour (etc, etc) on January 10, 1887. They were both born from the same parents, Mr. and Mrs. Mason. (I think that's how the name goes.) But, the two girls were not twins. How does this happen?

Apparantly, the answer's easier than I think, even though I've tried ones such as: the doctor wrote it on his documents wrong, one was born on midnight and the other on 12:01, etc.

So can anyone figure this out?

They're two from a set of triplets.

triplets would be correct, though I should point out the fallacy that you start by stating that they are twins, then they are not twins, so it is a poorly written riddle.

Fraternal twins aren't technically twins in most cases.

They are two different eggs that were there at the same time.

Real twins are one egg that splits in half.

You can be twins without being identical. ): Fraternal twins are real too.

Like how pheonix is a triplet with that-1guy and his sister.

"in most cases"

Sometimes you can develop to look differently once the egg splits. However, most fraternal twins don't meet the base requirements for twinhood.

only requirement for twinhood is to both be in the womb at the same time, identical twins split from the same egg, it is genetically impossible for twins who split to be different genetically, as they came from one set of reproductive material.

LOLOLOLOL.

they're two of triplets.

I got that instantly. Obviously I got that right so quickly because I'm a triplet and naturally should be treated differently.
