The Earth is doomed!

Long after Global Warming and dwindling Fossil fuels were cured the planets true killer was discovered. They called it Nemisis, A white dwarf companion star to our sun, whose orbit kept it far away the entire span of modern human history. Then came Doctor Oberon Geiger and his Rebirth Matrix, a sentient computer that would be the salvation of humanity.

Two thousand people, chosen at random from the whole of Earths population were Quatra-Scanned into the Matrix, storing not only precise genetic information, but memory engrams of every subject. The task finished, the Rebirth Matrix was loaded up into Eureka Maru, an experimental sub light starship and blasted unmaned to Nova Argos, an Earth-like planet 3 lightyears away.

Three Hundred Years Later...

As soon as the Matrix left the ship it went to work, sampling raw materials from the planet, as well as space born particles collected during it's three hundred year journey, went to work "Cloning" the volunteers.

You are one of those volunteers

Example form:

Name: Shane Mcgregor

Age: 33 (at time of scanning)

Occupation: Assistant to Oberon Geiger, tech specialist

Home Country: Scotland

Shane opened his newly formed eyes and breathed in with new lungs. "NOAH what happened?" he asked in a peculiar American accent and not his normal scottish accent. "NOAH what happened...report."

The Matrix, nicknamed NOAH activated it's vocal subroutine. "Apologies Shane but you were not scheduled to rouse for another ten minutes." NOAH said.

"Where am I?" Shane asked. "Terra Argos Shane, do you not remember?" NOAH said.

Shane gasped and looked around. "I'm a second life...weird!". he said

Stepping up on newly formed legs Shane took a tour around the NOAH complex, a massive building built in advance by AI driven DRD's (Diagnostic and Repair Droids). "NOAH how goes the rebirth process?" he asked. "The first 500 subjects will awake in a few hours Shane."

Leaving the complex, Shane looked at the black night sky and marveled at the billions of stars. "A new sky Ma." he said. "that sounded weird." he added speaking about his american accent.

He had mixed feeling about messing with peoples memory pathways, readjusting them so everyone scanned would speak American english, but Geiger said it "would work to your advantage, if everyone spoke the same language. A way to clear up confusion". As he looked up, he couldn't help but wonder the fate of Earth.

Name: Luke Temmen

Age: 22

Occupation: Computer Programmer

Home Country: USA

Luke quietly awoke on a bed with pure white sheets. He slowly got up, his hand over his head. He coughed a few times, while starting to breath.

"Mr. Temmen, how are you feeling" asked NOAH "Ugh. . . Wierd" Luke replied, getting up to stand on his legs "Do you find your new body strange?" "Actually, other then the tingling, its not that different" Luke said, rubbing his eyes.

"I am sure you are feeling hungry. I suggest you go to the food court" NOAH said "Um. . . Sure, wheres that?" Luke asked "Its one the first floor, if you leave the room then the elevator is at the end of hallway if you go right" NOAH explained. Luke nodded "Thanks" "My Pleasure".

Luke made his way down the clean and polished hallway. A row of glowing green arrows pointing him in the right direction.

As he entered the food court, he noticed another person eating.

"I thought I was first." Luke said outloud.

"Oh crap....sorry NOAH was supposed to alert me when the first batch was to wake up." Shane said.

Picking up a tablet and a scaner, Shane walked over. "Arm please." he asked grabbing Luke's arm. "Whow that is weird!" Luke said noticing a strange barcode like tattoo.

"Luke Temmen, computer programmer age 22." Shane said reading the information.

"You know my name Shane!" Luke said. "Yeah I know, but this is official business Luke. Come on lets get some food in you." Shane said

Luke nodded. He walked over to the food counter and looked at the various foods. "Hm. . ." He said looking at them all. When he was about to grab some food, another tray came out of a small slot in the wall. Luke looked at it. It was one of Luke's favorites. Tacos. . . filled with lettuce, tomato, onions, cheese, and sour cream.

Luke was almost drooling. He turned around and looked around the food court. He only saw Shane. "Well then. . ." he chuckled "Guess those are my tacos" he said, picking up the tray, and going over to sit by Shane.

>.< I'm hungry

Name: Evelyn Nestor

Age: 26

Occupation: Mystery (criminal fiction) author

Home Country: Ireland

The fist thing Evelyn did once she awoke was mumble to herself, "Well they really did it. Maybe I should start some science fiction stories." NOAH then asked her a few questions, and once everything seemed to check out she was sent to the food court to get something to eat. When she got there she was a little displeased. "I'm the only woman awake yet? Ah well." She sat in front of Shane and Luke. "A man's been murdered here," her tone of voice was over serious as to make it certain what she was saying was false, "He died from a blow to the head, but with no doctors awake to preform an autopsy the time of death is impossible to discern. My alibi is that I wasn't wake yet. His," motioning to Luke, "is that he was with you. With that information alone you must figure out which one of us is the killer."

She then sat back to watch him figure it out. This promised to be amusing.

((Evelyn's feisty and can have a bit of a temper... just FYI....))

"You've got to be kidding me" Luke said, standing up "We all just got to this new life. New planet. A clean slate, and there's already crime!" "Well, it wasn't me. I'm am NOT a murderer" Shane explained "Someone died, unless there's anyone else awake, its one of us" Evelyn said, hiding a smile.

"Well, we had better investigate" Luke said, clenching his fist in his other hand "Definitely" Evelyn said nodding "But then again, your just a mystery writer and your just doing this for amusement" Luke said, starting to smile, while Evelyn looked completely surprised.

((Rokai... "her tone of voice was over serious as to make it certain what she was saying was false" It was supposed to be known it was just for her amusement the whole time...))

"What? Me, joking?? You're kidding right. I mean this couldn't be what I do when I get bored could it?" She said, her voice dripping with the innocent sounding sort of sarcasm one finds themselves using in that sort of situation. "It couldn't possibly be what I do for a living?"

"Yeah, i know. I thought I'd just put on a little show" Luke said, sitting down again "Also, i KNOW your a mystery writer. It says it on your arm" he said, pointing to her arm. Then he continued picking pieces of lettuce and tomato out of his tacos.

((Luke can read barcode? It's not printed out for anyone to read... Shane's tricorder thing reads the tatto (like the checkout at the grocery) and then displays what it says in English... At least that's what I understood...))

((ooo. . . I didn't see that scanner part. Let me come up with a quick explantion))

EDIT: ((Well, guess its time to reveal. I planning on Luke being a underestimated super genius. Just like myself. Anyway, he easily read the barcode like this: Each line is converted into a number, both black and white lines, and the thickness determines the numbers Thinnest=1 Thickest=4. So he converted lines into numbers, and numbers into words(people can't really convert the numbers to words, but i made it so Luke can) ))

Correct, and it's called a Quatra-scanner.

Evelyn returned to her seat with a tray full of steamed vegetables. "How lucky, this is my favorite dish." she said digging in. "Yeah mine to." Luke said, his mouth full of taco meat. "Thank NOAH for that one." Shane said. "As you activated the syntheses chamber NOAH scanned your files and chose a comfort item, something from your memory and made it for you." he added. "It's amazing, these taste exactly like the Tacos from this tiny Mexican restaurant in Queens." "That's because they are constructs from your memory." NOAH said. "Made how?" Evelyn asked. "The recycled Coloital Gel protein left over from the Rebirth process." Shane said. "We're eating afterbirth!" Evelyn said dropping her fork. "Tastes good to me." Luke said taking another bite.

Chapter One: The First Five-Hundred

What had seemed like a very large place a month ago had quickly shrunk down as more and more second-lifers woke up. "How goes the prep run for the secon batch of 500 NOAH?" Shane asked. "On Schedule Shane, the DRD's are preparing the pods as we speak." NOAH said. "Very well keep me aprised of the situation, I'm going to get some breakfast."

Shane made his way to the cafe, and braced himself for the next round of artillery fire questions. As he was the first to wake he had been voted defacto leader of the whole magila.

"Shane we need to start the greenery project." Stacey Campbell, the lead Botanist said shoving a tech-pad in his face. "Stacey I'm hungry, can't I eat first?" he asked.

Grabbing a plate of french toast Shane grabved a seat with the "first five" as they were called a group including himself, Evelyn, Luke a three others. "Good morning fearless leader." Luke said sliding over a hot cup of coffee. "Have I thanked you for that software patch you wrote yet Luke?" Shane asked. "yeah you have, but I always like more props."

You see as time went on, eating the same three or four meals from memory had gotten rather boring, so Luke using his skills in Software development created an A.I patch to allow food memories of all second-lifers to be stored creating a Menu of sorts.

"You came just in time Shane, the daily theology argument is just about to start.

The selection process for Operation Rebirth fell into two categories, Biological and Quantitative.

Thousands of people were genetically scanned and those with unique genetic attributes were chosen. On the other side people who were tops in their fields were chosen, Theologists, Astronomers, Astrophysicists, Doctors, Software developers, and historians were chosen.

"What now?" Shane asked. "Father Patrick Mallone says that we are the chosen and that this is heaven, he says his proof is NOAH the system is like the biblical Noah." Luke said. "But Sister Helen disagrees, she says that we are dead and this is Purgatory." Evelyn added.

"They do know that N.O.A.H is an acronym right? It stands for Non Organic Automated Homestead. Doctor Geigers attempt at humor."

"What else?" Shane asked. "The Biologists are debating as to weather were clones at all, seeing as some of us have scars from injures sustained in life."

"Everyone attention." Shane said standing up. "I just heard that some are debating as to weather we are clones or not. The snswer is yes." he said. "Then why do we have scars, moles and other blemishes our other bodies had?" Dr. Thomas Moore asked.

"Tom it's very simple. Doctor Geiger was rushing to finish NOAH, his name being an ironic inside joke by the way when he realised that NOAH was hacing troyble reconstituting the genetic sequences in proper order. So Luke and I created a program to expedite the reconstruction process. When people sighned up the supplied genetic material and a full Quarta-Scan of their body, which NOAH used to reconstruct the human body correctly. That's why Steve is bald, Derek has an appendectomy scar, Jim has his Rhinoplasty and Evelyn has her breast implants. Now can't we have a nice meal for once!"

"Had to announce it to the whole waking world did you?" Evelyn muttered under her breath, "You're not helping your clause with that last one." Evelyn's temper was raging and for five seconds shot Shane a glance that read, "If I could kill you, you'd be dead by now." However to calm herself down she started running out scenarios for a story with a surprisingly familiar victim n her mind.

As he sat down Shane could feel Eve's eyes on him, a stare so fierce that it would likely burn a hole into his tunic. "What?" he asked. "You really had to announce to the entire planet that I have...implants!" she said annoyed. "Yeah sorry about that, I was angry and wasn't thinking...they look umm... they look real." Shane said. "And I bet they feel real too." Luke said raising his eyebrows. "Grow up!" Eve said.

As Shane finished his breakfast, it hit him. "That's weird NOAH should've contacted me about starting phase two of rebirth."

Shane pulled a tablet(think future iPad) from his pocket and turned it on. "NOAH come in." he said. "NOAH..." As a fuzzy image from the camera flashed on screen Shane got up and ran out the door.

With Evelyn and Luke behind him he approached the lab door. "Why's it open!" Luke said.

Shane slid to the main console. "Oh god!" he said looking at the readings. "What's wrong Shane?" Evelyn asked. "The systems in a cascading failure!" "What does that mean?" Evelyn asked. "It means that they're dying everyone stored in NOAH is dying."

"I thought this door was locked Shane!" Luke shouted. "It is the only one with access is me..." "And the DRD's!" he said picking up a cannibalised DRD. "Someone hacked a DRD and used it to gain entry to an off limits area?" Luke asked. "Are they really all dead?" Evelyn asked. "No but they will be." Shane said. "Whoever did this tricked NOAH into an unauthorized reboot, and while he was out tripped the Rebirth matrix with a cascading failure. But we have one thing they didn't count on." Shane said. "And that is?" Eve asked. "NOAH's backup."

Plugging his pad into the console caused NOAH to Reboot faster. "Hello Shane." "NOAH stop the cascade." Shane shouted.

After a few moments, that seemed like forever NOAH announced. "Cascade halted." "How many pods are still viable NOAH?" Shane asked. "Out of the fifteen hundred pods remaining, only two hundred and fifty are still operational." NOAH said. "My god Shane, is that enough? Can we start over with 750 people!" Evelyn asked. "We'll have to." Shane said. "Well Eve you got your wish, a real murder mystery." he added. "And I think I found the first clue." Luke turned the hacked DRD over revealing words written in red paint. "Death to the Infidels, praise Allah."

"You've got to be kidding me, what is this a Tom Clancy novel!" Shane said.

Luke shook his head a couple times and said "This is a problem" "Thank you captain obvious, you've been promoted to general" Evelyn said "I'm talking about their hacking the DRDs. If people can use that to gain access and do stuff like this, i think we should shut then down for a while, or at least until we catch this guy" Luke said "but this place wouldn't last very long without them" Shane insisted "So then, we find the guy before very long. Its pretty simple. Just look at the profiles, then single out everyone who it Arabic and good with computers".

Shane did this while Luke was talking "um. . . theres no arabians" he said "What are you talking about? i saw some in the food court" Evelyn said "Well, i think this guy is smart" Luke said, starting to pace "Whys that?" Shane asked "The guy deleted all of the Arabic files, not just one. That makes them all a suspect" "What do you mean deleted them?" "Well, if he could turn off NOAH, I'm sure he would be able to delete a few profiles" Luke said "So now all we need to do is round up some Arabians, and do some interrogation" Luke finished.
