Darkness

By. TRBG

Based on the game LIT

Sixteen year old Noah Philips opened his eyes and stared at the alarm clock perched by his bed. The bright green numbers screamed 7:20 A.M. and he knew it was time to get up. As much as he hoped for Friday, it was only Tuesday.

Trudging downstairs he found the house deserted, Dad had left for work hours ago and Mom had left for her Pilates class, a plate of cold scrambled eggs the only evidence she had been there at all.

A quick turn in the microwave and the eggs emerged warm...and rubbery. After choking them down he hopped in the shower and get dressed. Grabbing his backpack Noah hurried out the door and began to trudge to the bus stop.

About halfway up he noticed a smear of yellow peaking out from behind two houses.

"Oh no the Bus!" Noah squeaked

Breaking into a clumsy sprint Noah just about made the bus before it broke the curb and drove away.

He looked back at his house and wished he could just go home, but he knew that if he did his mother would be all over him.

Sinching up his sneakers he settled in for the three mile walk to school.

The walk hadn't taken him as long as he thought and as he neared the building the second period bell began to ring.

The closer Noah got to the door the more he could see that something was wrong, every classroom window was pitch black.

As he neared the East entrance he noticed that say for sunlight streaming into the main lobby it too was dark.

Quietly opening the glass double door Noah slid silently inside. He pulled the door closed and stood motionless in the splash of light that streaked across the floor. He followed the light path into the lobby and stopped just short of the barrier between light and inky darkness that waited beyond.

Closing his eyes Noah cocked his head and tried to listen for voices, he heard nothing except an odd skittering sound almost like a crab skittering across hot beach sand.

Acting very slowly Noah inched his index finger into the unnatural blackness and quickly pulled it back when it began to sting. To his horror a pair of deep gashes flanked either side as if someone dragged a knife across it.

Another shaft of light screamed at him a few feet away, as did a long path courtesy of a row of west facing windows. The Only problem was the dark gap between them and whatever nameless horror lived beyond.

As Noah sat there a thought dawned on him.

"Maybe Artificial Light will work to"

A quick search of his backpack produced a flashlight his father had bought him when Noah filled in for a friend delivering Newspapers. Unlike traditional battery powered models, this Skystore exclusive was powered by electro magnetic resistence, meaning all you needed was to shake it and the charge would last for hours.

As Noah shook the torch a tiny row of LED's began to light up ranging from red to orange, yellow and finally green.

Pointing the beam around him he could amost watch the darkness crawling away to escape the light.

Placing the light on the edge of the sun shaft, Noah created a bridge from one light path to the other. Walking across he made it to the opposite side and then yanking a piece of bungie from his backpack brought the flashlight along with him.

Looking down the long hall he marveled at the bright sunny path and the pitch darkness that bordered it, should he proceed or turn back?

Against his better judgement he decided to proceed.
