Posted 5 Apr 2012 Ooh, I've wanted to see the original Wicker Man. Supposed to have some great music as well as some pretty amaazing scenes. Christopher Lee's in that one, isn't he? Watched Unstoppable yesterday. About a runaway train carrying toxic chemicals. I don't remember getting into the suspense and drama of a movie like that in awhile, but I found myself gasping at certain parts, talking to the charaacters. Admittedly I was in a strange mood, but it was a good film. Also watched The Devil's Rejects. Funny how I can be repulsed by the main characters and yet almost rooting for them. Posted 5 Apr 2012 Whenever I hear "Wicker Man" all I can think about is Nicholas Cage punching women in a bear suit and then getting stung by bees.
Posted 5 Apr 2012 Yeah, that's the remake, which is unintentionally hilarious. I'd like to see both.
Posted 6 Apr 2012 Double posting, oh my. I just watched Monster Brawl, which is exactly what you'd think it is. It's a movie where classic monsters fight for the championship title. Think old movie monsters, some of them made copyright-friendly like Swamp Gut and Vampire Lady. It's bad, but in a fun way. For the most part I've seen better acting in pornos, but you can just tell most of these people are having a blast (except for that blonde girl who looked bored out of her mind). There are a couple famous folks from wrestling here, like Dave Foley and Jimmy Hart (not always sure how famous, not a big wrestling fan myself). It's pretty low budget (imdb estimates 200,000 CAD), mostly using monster costumes and fake gore in lieu or digital effects, which was probably for the best. My personal favourite moment was an Animal Planet style intro for the swamp creature. This is a show to watch with friends, drink beer (if you're of age) and laugh at the ridiculousness, the lack of continuity, the cheesy one-liners, etc.
Posted 9 Apr 2012 Whenever I hear Wicker Man I think it's some horror movie set in Wick, a town 20 miles from my hometown. We call people from there "Wickers". So a Wicker Man to us also means a man from Wick.
Posted 10 Apr 2012 Yeah I remember that too, it's another reason why I get it confused. The original is in Scotland anyway, and that's the DVD we have lying around at home.
Posted 12 Apr 2012 I should look for the original Wicker Man. Recently watched Striptease, which stars Demi Moore and apart from the dance/strip sequences is pretty mediocre. Oh, and the bouncer, who had some good lines. I found the whole premise pretty implausible: Moore's character, who used to work as a secretary for the FBI, divorces her drug-addict criminal husband and he gets custody of their 7-year-old daughter. In order to afford the legal expenses for the appeal she now has to work as a stripper. But I'm probably overthinking the plot in a movie where the main draw is seeing Demi Moore dancing while topless. Also watched Basic Instinct last night, and I understand why it's so famous. Even in scenes where everyone's fully clothed there's this underlying sexual tension that's just as scary as it is alluring, especially in that famous scene where Catherine is being questioned by a room full of male police officers. It's that fear of being controlled by your own sexuality that makes these femme fatale stories engaging. I can't help but worry, though, about the implication that all women are manipulative bitches. I think maybe the opposite of a neo-noir movie is a Lifetime movie.
Posted 13 Apr 2012 I have the sudden urge to watch both Sherlock Holmes movies this weekend. I just love the fight scenes where he goes through the entire fight in his head before a punch is even thrown. And the soundtrack, dear lord THE SOUNDTRACK!
Posted 15 Apr 2012 Watched No Country For Old Men earlier in the week. I enjoyed it, especially the villain who was extremely creepy, but it didn't feel like there was an ending. Not always a bad thing, just not sure how to feel about it.
Posted 19 Apr 2012 Go watch the Cabin in the Woods. You cannot be disappointed.
Posted 19 Apr 2012 I will as soon as I can. We only have one movie theatre, and it plays mostly pretty generic stuff, with a few one-night-only niche movies.
