The time comics almost died

In the 50's a "Doctor" named Fredric Wertham published findings from a decade of studying Juvenile offenders and found that many of them read comics. This led Dr. Wertham to the conclusion that Comics warp kids minds. His book "Seduction of the Innocent" described overt and covert depictions of Violence, Sex, Drug use and other adult fare in "Crime Comics" a term he used to not only describe the Gangster/Murder stories but Super Hero and Horror books as well. He also saw covert messages meant to warp moral ideal such as the relationship between Batman and Robin as "A wish dream of two homosexuals living together". He also attacked Wonder Woman claiming her independence flew in the face of how women are "Supposed to act" and that she was probably a lesbian.

This Quack's book lead unbelievably as it seems to a Senate Subcommittee on Juvenile Delinquency where he was a star witness. Because of fear of government censorship publishers created the "Comics Code Authority" to censor their own material. The Code not only banned violent images but also words and concepts such as "Terror" and "Zombie". They also prohibited writers from making villains out of Police, Judges and law enforcement.

Over the years many publishers have stopped adherence to the code in 2011 it was dropped altogether.

What Universe is it anyway?

There have been many discussions as to which Universe in the Marvel Multiverse The collected films draw it's inspiration from. Most bring up Nick Fury played in the films by Samuel L. Jackson as proof that they are inspired by the "Ultimate" Universe (known to comic fans as 1610), because in the original Marvel U (616) Fury is white.

But I don't think it's as cut and dry as that. There are many aspects that suggest that both 616 and 1610 are inspiration for the films.

1. Tony Stark:

616 is named Anthony while 1016 is named Antonio.

2. Thor:

616 was originally a Doctor named Donald Blake who found a walking caine which was actually Mjollnir changing him into Thor. This was later retconned into Donald being actually Thor with magic Amnesia.

3. Caps costume is inspired heavily by 1610

4. In Captain America during the Rebirth scene they open a green cylinder revealing the vials of blue Super Soldier formula. Three are missing. Was this an oversight or a covert reference to Super Soldier prototype Isaiah Bradley from "Truth: Red, White and Black" a 616 story.

5. Hawkeye's suit is clearly inspired by 1610 while Black Widow's is clearly 616.

6. Mjollnir Thor's hammer (initially) looked radically different in 1610 from it's 616 counterpart.

What other things have you noticed?

Yeah but hawkeye's new costume in mainstream has been redesigned to match the movie costume more closely.

Also, whats the deal with Ronin? I know it's Hawkeye but why and when was he Ronin?

Clint Barton became Ronin following the Civil War so he could join the New Avengers along with Spider-Man, Wolverine, Sentry, Luke Cage and Spider-Woman.

Why couldn't he do that as Hawkeye? None of the other heroes got new personas.

This is a little hard to explain, but here goes.

Hawkeye died while on a mission investigating a Kree warship, his quiver was set on fire and the bombs exploded. He sacrificed himself by diving into the ships engines to disable it. He was resurrected following the "House of M" and was offered the mantle of Captain America by Tony Stark (Steve Rogers had recently died). Clint Barton declined and left heroics until Spider-Woman asked him to join the New Avengers on a mission to Japan to rescue Maya Lopez (The first Ronin) from the ninja clan The Hand. Barton decided to retire Hawkeye and became Ronin II in honor of Maya. After she was rescued he offered the mantle back to Maya, but she refused deciding to become Echo once again. Barton kept the Ronin identity for sometime before returning to Hawkeye. The mantle of Ronin passed to former Red Guardian Alexei Shostakiv a Russian spy and ex-husband of Natasha Romonov (Black Widow).

Just like last year, the flunkies of the Westboro Baptist Church led by "Pastor" Fred Phelps will be picketting outside the Mecca of Geekdom, the San Diego Comic Con. This fruit loop claims that dressing up like Superman or other characters takes worship away from the Lord. He equates Spider-Man and Batman to the Golden Calves of old.

What do you think of this admitted bigots claims. Is Peter Parker the second coming or a wolf in sheep's clothing?

Are you legit asking us this question? I don't think anyone outside of their (very) small church/family agrees with them on nearly any of their beliefs. let alone any as absurd as anything involving super heroes vs God.

Yeah, WBC is just insane. I'm not sure half the time if they aren't just trolling for attention.

But on what you posted earlier: comics were a new thing that appealed to youngsters. New media, or new trends in general, tend to get blamed for a perceived decline in 'the youth of today'. Jazz, Rock and Roll, comic books, Dungeons and Dragons, video games, etc.

Does this mean I should wait to open the Church of Hulk?

That's a church I'd attend every Sunday.

MARVELous news True Believers, The Avengers are once again Cinema's Greatest Heroes nabbing the coveted Number One spot for a second straight week. Moreover the film has grossed over $1 Billion worldwide in just 19 days making this the 11th fastest grossing film in history (supplanting The Dark Knight...suck it DC).

I'm sounding Balder's horn, charging all Marvelites with a Mission, keep the streak going! By Odin's Beard see the Avengers, and if you've already seen it, see it again!
