To be honest, my brother was the one who bought the game and was playing it alongside me. He absolutely hated it and I didn't really give up but didn't care if he wanted to take it back.

I mention some light spoilers below, so I won't be spoiling them because they're not game ruiny, but just be wary.

I wholeheartedly agree with his comments on both Fire emblem: awakening and Dark Souls. You'll see some people being idiots and saying things like "Dark Souls is 'artificial difficulty,' all you can do to get through a level is memorize where everyone and everything is and how to get through them." That's hilariously wrong, and only applies to the most specific of circumstances.

Sen's Fortress, for example. The very first trap, unless your reflexes are solid (or your vit/def is high), will almost always get you, because you haven't learned about that trap yet. From then on, absolutely every last trap in Sen's Fortress can be easily avoided if you proceed with caution and take careful note of your surroundings, now that you know what you're getting into. There certainly are some devious hiding places, like leaving rings at the ends of the tunnels the boulders will chase you down, but if you can see a hole in the wall, look for a switch that might activate that hole, and when you step on it, throw up your shield and face the wall instantly to intercept any and all of the arrows currently flying at you. If you see blood on a moving platform, be very wary and stay as safe as you can, because there's probably a trap waiting for you. And it's really, really hard to get caught unawares by the bladed pendulums, or the boulders, or the giant with the flaming bombs. If you actually pay attention, you'll be fine.

There's very, very few unavoidable traps and instances that require you to rely solely on memory past your first experience. Sure, maybe you'll be utterly shocked when a jelly jumps on your head in the depths, but you'll know from then on to watch the ceilings. Maybe your first trip into blight town will result in your dying via toxin or poison, but you'll know to come back with a wary eye for dart shooters and bring extra moss. Maybe a painting guardian knocks you off the rafters in the church in Anor Londo, but once again, you apply everything you've learned from the rest of the game and do the obvious thing: use your shield (or roll). And if a giant skeleton sneaks up on you in the darkness that is the giant's tomb, you'll know you should get a light source so you can see them before they can see you.

Everything you learn in the tutorial level applies to everything else in the rest of the game, without exception. Maybe Dark Souls could do a better job explaining what each stat does and what happens when you level up, but aside from that, you have a solid foundation of what you can and need to do within the first thirty minutes of the game.

(This is about Fire Emblem, though)

I also totally agree with his point on the random enemies showing up on the corners of the map and killing you. You know Miriel's son's level? Fuck that level. I must have played it seven or eight times trying to beat it, because you have to split your guys up to grab the villages before anyone else does, and overpowered units fly in from all corners attacking your now divided army. Every other recruitment level I did was cake, but that level was just stupidly filled with units coming in out of nowhere and no way to react because sand everywhere and reduced movement speed.

I was using a Caestus in each hand, but the parry felt wrong so I had to switch back to my shield

And shield and caestus is somehow better for you?

But yes, I like to be able to block, and if the second Caestus isn't going to do anything useful I'd rather the shield

But I now use my Scimitar+5 and Knight Shield+5 just cause they work together well, despite the shield being a little heavy for my tastes

I'm watching my friend play this game now. He's at the part thats like a big swamp. Leeches and stuff, you know? He said he hasn't died much so far. And the Black Knights go down too easily for him. Are Black Knights tough?
