Downsizing Game

We will now play a different game.

There will be five rounds in this game. Each round will last a minimum of 24 hours, and a maximum of 48.

At the start of each round, a subject will be offered by a chosen player, and you will discuss this subject for the duration of the round.

Before the end of the round, you will send me five votes. These votes will be the names of players you have chosen to win the game. You can vote for other players as few or as many times as you like, but you cannot vote for yourself. If you refrain from voting, I'll subtract the number of votes you don't make from your final score.

For example, let's say we have 5 players in the game. In round 1, they vote like this:

  • Player 1 votes: 2, 2, 2, 2, 2
  • Player 2 votes: 1, 3, 3, 3, 5
  • Player 3 votes: 1, 4, 4, 4, 5
  • Player 4 votes: 1, 1, 2, 2, 5
  • Player 5 votes: NO VOTES

After that first round, the votes would look like this:

  1. Player 2: 7 votes
  2. Player 1: 4 votes
  3. Player 4: 3 votes
  4. Player 3: 3 votes
  5. Player 5: -2 votes

And that's how it works out, though the results will not be revealed to the players until the end of the game. There will be no decided winners or losers. You can vote tactically to try and bring certain people up to the top, or attempt to bring other people down by not voting for them. But in the end it doesn't matter all that much.

The next round begins with a new subject. The rounds will continue in this fashion until the end of the game, when the scores will be revealed.

Players will not be eliminated from the game at any point. Inactive players will simply drop to the bottom of the leader board from lack of voting, and further from the other players not giving them their votes. Everyone will continue through every round until the end of the game.

The subject of each round will be scrutinized by me before I post it, to ensure you can actually have any kind of discussion.

There wont be any limit to the number of participants. You don't really have to be active or switched on to play this game. Just remember to send me five names before the end of each round.

lol, "scrutinized". questions like "do you like pumpkin pie?" spawned bizarrely long threads. well, i guess "do you like zelda?" would be pretty pointless.

As in "Do you forfeit the game". Couldn't make something out of that really. Pumpkin Pie was something you could discuss though.

For this game I'll ideally be looking for AMA style questions/topics.

Also, I'm not concerned with derailment from the original topic.

@LL: I'm never really certain with these games how it'll turn out. Mostly, because I have more confidence that it will, it's to make sure people come back and vote.

And, while I'm not sure people will end up playing it this way, it's in order to give you somewhere to chat, so that you can try and get people to want you to be the winner. Since in this game, people will place votes for who they want the winner to be, you want to decide how you want other people to see you in order to get their votes, and ultimately win the game.

The reason I'm only showing the results at the end of the day is because I want peoples' only reasons to cast votes to be based on what's going on in the game. If I posted a leaderboard at the end of day 1, and Player 1 had 20 votes, then surely everybody would think "Can't vote for player 1 next time!". I'm not sure it's the best idea to remove this element by hiding the scoreboard, but I'm going with it for now anyway.

Instead, people can still think to themselves "Well Player 1 is acting in a very crowd pleasing way today, so he'll probably get the most votes. I'll put all my votes on Player 2 and Player 3 to even things out."

Thinking on it now, maybe revealing the leaderboard would be better, as a reminder that they will be ranked at the end of the game. Tactical thinking can still occur of course, wondering how everyone else will vote in response to the people talking in the thread, the leaderboard, and even further, how everyone else might choose to vote.

But if you played Minority Rule though, you'll know that a lot of people didn't play tactically, and just stuck around for the chat. I wanted to have a new way to play Minority Rule, keeping the discussion part that people seemed to enjoy. The problem with Minority Rule was that it didn't last that long, and if it did get to a second round, there were too few people to make it all that fun for them, and exiled the people who weren't lucky. Since it wasn't really peoples' poor playing that got them kicked out, it felt mean to exclude them from the next discussion. So I fashioned a new sort of game taking rules from somewhere else that has rules that would allow for more rounds, and people not being kicked out.

If the whole "place five votes on people you want to win" doesn't work out as popular as voting Yes or No to a question, then I go back to Minority Rule and simply not kick people out each round, and rank them based on how often people voted in the minority throughout the game. Another part of this game is that the question doesn't serve as much of a purpose, and so there's more options as to what it could be. It just serves as a stage in this game, rather than much of a basis for any tactics.

I've based these games off of rounds of the manga Liar Game, where all the characters compete in psychological highly tactical battles with each other. I thought they were interesting, so I tried to just port it to a forum without much changing it. And each game I'm trying to tweak it more and more to make it an enjoyable forum game people can play, and will want to play more of in the future. That's why I'm more than willing to accept opinions on how it should work and how it should be run. It's still in the works.

At the moment though, I'd describe it as simply a glorified chat thread. The subject rotates each round, and there's a result at the end. But it's mostly just a chat where you're more obligated to check and think about how to act by the end. You can act however you want in the thread though, so it's not like normal threads in that sense.

and then in a few months, with the popularity of the new forum game [insert final silly teto name here], hnet becomes famous as the place that started it all, with its revolutionary gameplay that keeps evolving ahead of everyone else.

Cascade, Chimetals, LL, Necropolis, Ammonsa, 2jo4, and Emsomniac. Welcome to the Downsizing Game.

The rules were gone over in the OP, but for your convenience, I'll explain as briefly as possible the rules for you here.

At the start of each round, you will be given a topic of discussion; a stage for the game to be played on. Before the end of each round, you will submit to me, via PM the names of 5 players besides yourself, giving names as few or as many as you like (eg. P1: "I vote for P2 3 times, and P4 2 times"). For each individual vote you receive, you get 1 point. For each vote you don't make, you lose one point. At the end of each round you will be ranked by number of points, and the rankings will be posted at the end of the round. The game will last for 5 rounds. Each round will last 48 hours. Delays between each round may vary.

There it is, quite simply put. As in Minority Rule, you're quite free to act however you like in the game, and outside of the thread. The only condition is that your votes must be sent to me before the time limit of 48 hours has been met. It's not necessary for you to vote at all or cast all five of your votes, but the negative votes is reason enough for you to vote, and punishment enough for people not paying attention.

This is a light game, unless you wish to try and play it more tactically. No pressure though. It's mostly intended as a discussion thread with a game twist. I hope you like it.

______

Topics will mostly be decided by the players, and they can choose whatever they like. But try to make it something you actually can discuss, preferably something that might create a great division of opinion between the players. Serious discussions or nicer discussions are good. The discussion is your opportunity to get peoples' votes.

For example, someone who expresses a homophobic point of view in an LGBTQ discussion will end up not being very popular. Whether a situation like that however, is yet to be seen. I suppose, whereas Minority Rule favoured the unpopular opinion, this is actively against it. But you don't need to be honest in the discussion, and you don't have to vote honestly either. It's up to you how you act, and that could be the essence of the game for tactical players.

______

Additionally, for round 1 only, I will allow players to join while the game is being held. I will make a point to remind you all in PMs before the end of the day who is in the game. Each day I will allow you to vote whenever you like and change your votes at will, but after the deadline is met your votes are finalised, and cannot be changed.

The first topic has been decided by me, because I am boring and I want to go back on everything I've said.

The topic is...

If you had run of the forum, what would you do?

[Pt.2: "What do you think needs to change?"]
