Posted 20 Apr 2013 I know not a lot about science. I'm not all that smart in that regard. Though if you ever did wonder, children have trouble eating brussel sprouts and other bitter foods because they have a greater number of bitterness receptors on the back of their tongue. As you grow up you have less, but their intention is to protect from poisons. I imagine that since children don't know any better and stick any old rubbish in their mouth and eat it, then they're at higher risk of poisoning themselves. So when children can't swallow brussel sprouts it's just them being stubborn, but their bodies actively fighting against potential poisons. If a child could easily eat brussel sprouts without any problems, I'd be worried about them.
