I think it's something like assassinations, or 'killings', are thought-out rationally and planned, whereas a murder is done as an act of passion, out of hatred or frustration with the world, stuff like that. Killings are kind of like murder but without the emotion I guess?

 

Like someone who decided to kill 3 people they had no affiliation with, and then set about it in a methodical manner would be a serial killer. The word "serial" usually relates to something that forms part of a series.

While someone who goes and kills three random people in a shopping mall, in one of those massive firearms disasters you have in America every other day, would be a mass murderer.

I think you actually havta kill at least 4 people in a mass murder for it to be considered "mass" or any number of people during a church service. But I think the assassinations that were discribed here were sometimes with passion. Like why would you kill john Lennon if not for some real reason, you know? I always felt that assassinations should be a term for a professional killer.
