Oh right, I should mention in here that I actually played this game.

I gotta say, Kirigiri was my favorite character all the way up until the very end of the game when Junko appeared. Holy shit, once Junko makes her appearance in the second half of the final trial, the entire game just changes. I spent that two hour period just awestruck at this character, it was really shocking. Cascade showed me the anime back when it came out and was really disappointed in it because it didn't do the game any justice, and was worried about me playing the full game because I knew what happened and the weight of what I saw probably wouldn't hit me as hard. But I gotta say, she was absolutely right in saying the anime does not do the game any justice. Junko was a way cooler character than she was in the anime. So now I'm like "who's my fav??? Junko or Kirigiri???"

I'm going to buy the spin-off game so I can be 100% justified in hating it's extremely gross and disgusting elements I've heard so much about. Every successive game in this series is going to get worse and worse about the creepy fanservice and terrible treatment of female characters lmao I am so betting on it. anime will inevitably be disappointing on those fronts. why did I allow myself to fall down this rabbit hole

it's a shame because spin-off shooter/survivor game starring Naegi's sister and Fukawa (who actually gets a character and is not just being "lol abuse and mental illness jokes") being best friends honestly is an awesome idea for a game but they really shat all over it from what it seems lol. DR1 was soooooo great and DR2 was also good-but-not-as-good in the long-run I really am worried the series is gonna crash fast with any successive entries after what this spin-off game was like... guess we'll wait and see how it plays when it releases in autumn

sorry for being so negative lol but I just have (reasonable) low expectations honestly. it'll be fun to actually play the game tho

I've played the game, and I can say that the complaints about "gross and disgusting elements" are completely unfounded. It's just whiners being whiners. It boggles my mind how Danganronpa is a series about juxtaposing dark themes with inappropriate comedy (the executions, anyone?), but the second that gets applied to anything remotely sexual people just lose their shit.

The game's story is dark and twisted, and it's a definite contender for the darkest story in the Danganronpa franchise. But it's supposed to be dark and twisted. That's the point.

Sorry, no, "it's supposed to be bleak and twisted and inappropriate for the sake of the story/showing how awful the world of DR is!" is actually just not an excuse for the inclusion of fanservice at the expense of TEN-THIRTEEN YEAR OLD characters. Putting the rest under spoiler tags because it's long, ranty, spoilery for DRAE and honestly after this post lets just go back to talking about the game and being hype for the release and the like. I honestly didn't intend for this derail to happen, and it's the last derail we needed on this forum of all places. I've had enough of these discussions with DR fans on tumblr anyways.

Kotoko the Warrior Girl? Where do you even start with her? Constant panty shots during the game, all framed for jokes with cutesy, comedic music playing? Camera angles going up under her skirt during serious discussions which don't involve fanservice in the slightest? panty shots with her butt in the air??? This is a character who is a sexual abuse victim and is literally a child. The entire fight with her where Genocider strips her down??? Ends with her being all "I swear I'm 18!!!"??? This isn't taking the subject of rape seriously to show that it's horrid and puppys over people's lives and the people in DR's world are awful and everything's so terrible it's literally using it as a joke. A punchline. It's actually really frustrating in this case because sometimes the game does take her backstory seriously and shows how it's completely ruined her life. And those scenes are actually really well-written. But then it does this shit. You can't have your cake and eat it too with this kind of material! And none of the other kids are treated as jokes at all so why is it coincidentally the female character whose backstory deals with rape who gets this shit. Hmm. I wonder why that is.

Then the horrendous shit with the Groping Machine Minigame. Play as Komaru as you try to break free from the machine and bat away the hands trying to "tickle" her crotch with her moaning and squirming whilst a pink porno vision filter is placed over the screen. Can you really argue that wasn't intended to titillate the audience these kind of games are marketed towards? I don't care if it's justified in-story as "the victim becomes the abuser" or whatever. there was no need to make it into a hentai-esque MINIGAME to laugh at and enjoy. It's actually disgusting. nuke puppying chapter 3 into the stratosphere.

Oh, and the Monaka randomly kissing Nagisa scene was extremely unnecessary and should never have been shown. Sorry, no. I don't want to see little kids acting like that. I don't care if it's meant to make you uncomfortable. It crosses a line. At most, just imply it. don't show it TWICE. How is this hard to understand.

why do anime nerds always leap to defend this shit. it is ALWAYS anime. anime is so bad for this. honestly i had a giant bit here talking about how fanservice and sexual harassment and every female character being subject to it/perpetrating it endlessly has gotten worse from DR1 to DR2 to DRAE but you honestly probably dont care. I'm not really going to discuss this anymore and I'm just going to say if you played the games and saw all the above and thought "This was handled 100% tastefully and is definitely not offensive to anyone" then we just kind of have a fundamental viewpoint difference and I'm never going to convince you otherwise. But saying people who complain about this stuff because it was offensive to them because, you know, they've actually experienced these issues at hand and don't particularly take well to a dumb anime game treating it like a joke half the time, are just "whiners being whiners" is really shitty and dickish, sorry. Media doesn't exist in a bubble etc.

What fanservice? Kotoko's underwear is big, poofy, and not anywhere near sexual. When Genocider "strips her down" the only exposed skin we ever see of her is her arms and around her head.

Once again, the groping machine minigame is to molestation as the iconic executions are to murder. When you break everything down, it's just a bunch of Mickey Mouse hands waving around over Komaru's body making vague grabbing motions. There's nothing to even indicate she's being touched. How can you claim the groping minigame was intended to be titillating when there's not even any visual indication that any actual groping is occurring?

"Randomly" kissing? What aspect exactly about Monaka's kiss was random? Also, no, that scene was POWERFUL. And it wouldn't have had a fraction of that power if those scenes weren't explicitly shown. I can understand you saying that you don't want to see that, but to say that they shouldn't have shown it is just plain wrong.

I leap to defend this for the same reason I get angry at people who try to have the word "nigger" taken out of Huckleberry Finn. Because I can't stand the "this doesn't conform to my life views therefore it's evil" mentality. Because I don't like it when people try to say "this is off-bounds, no matter what." As someone who likes to see dark, mature themes in media that aren't always handled in politically-correct ways, I feel compelled to push back against it.

Come on this isn't about life views, it's about who the audience is and how they're going to receive the material. In America I'd kind of buy your argument but we're talking about Japan, where it's a lot more about giving the customer what they want. And the consumers of DR by and large don't want cringe humor, they want girls. It's vaguely funny at best and reaffirming of nasty attitudes at worst so just drop it already. Sorry but this really isn't something to be argued over extensively in this one case at least :x

I'll admit I haven't read Huck Finn or DRAE. Coincidentally they're both things that are on my "to do" list of entertainment one day, but I've got too many other books I'm going through at the moment to get to Huck Finn and I'd rather play DR2 before I look at DRAE.

That said, I'm confident Huck Finn did not portray the use of the word "Nigger" in an inherently comedic light, in the same way that DRAE portrays child rape victims in a comedic light. To use cascade's earlier comparison of "Having your cake and eating it too," the Dangan Ronpa creators actually said their game featured fanservice in an interview:

YzNsQ4Z.jpg

Monokuma:
Two girls as the main characters….*perverted breathing*

Kodaka:
It’s about their friendship!…with some fanservice!

Terasawa:
Fanservice? (laughs)

Kodaka:
Nothing explicit, of course. Just some here and there.

Saito:
So is there, or isn’t there? (laughs)

Kodaka:
Well, seeing that there are two girls as protagonists, I hope the male fans enjoy. What I hope everyone will notice is the deepening friendship between Komaru and Fukawa. I wrote it so that female fans can identify with them as well. Even though I’m a middle-aged man (bitter smile), I hope players will be able to see how their relationship changes through the story.

Sasaki:
A lot of people have said that after reading the script, they began to like Fukawa.

Kodaka:
Even if you don’t like Fukawa, I hope you can still have fun. After all, she has a leg slit now, which is sexy!

So at that, I don't see a comparison between Dangan Ronpa and Huck Finn. I'm pretty sure Mark Twain didn't write it with the ulterior motive of calling his fictional black characters "Nigger" a thousand times so he could please his racist fanbase.

Instead of immediately defending the groping sequence as being in the vein of the series's wacky over-the-top executions and tone in general, ask yourself this: Why a groping minigame? Why not something else? If the only criteria the creators felt the need to satisfy was something ridiculous and gritty, why not go for something like Leon's death in the original DR, when he was beaten to death by baseballs? If the character dies or something, why not have them swallow dynamite or something until they burst? There'd be a special level of irony there if none of the dynamite went off and the character just comedically exploded from eating too much of it, a la loony tunes. That's just a dumb example I made up off the top of my head, but my point still stands; They put a groping machine in the game because they wanted to have a little girl's body groped.

So, in response to this I will say I like Dangan Ronpa 1 more than 2, but probably not for the same reasons. The atmosphere and overall tone of Dangan Ronpa 1 was much more dark and memorable to me than DR2. 2 while messed up in many aspects didn't feel as ominous. In DR1 you were trapped in a dark atmospheric school, and usually everything that was done was much more harsh and in the name of survival.

I would look into one of the Let's Plays and see for yourself, but just to give you an idea of what's so great I'll say the characters are awesome and gameplay heavily involves making relationships with these characters to get better at solving murder mysteries.

So I finished DR2 today. Can you guys guess my favorite character? The answer is "probably" because it was definitely pretty obvious who my favorite character was, I mean if you just look at the cast you can just tell who the most "pheo" character is...
