Establishing Hyrule

((ah sorry, I've been way to distracted lately! I'll try and post more often :o ))

Sault had never seen one of these creatures before, but given the look of malice on their faces it was a good guess these were demons of some sort, probably very powerful. When Fintan shouted "Demon Lord! Be on your guard everyone!" it confirmed his suspicion, not to mention the fear it awoke in his heart. Weren't these things supposed to be all dead by now? He swallowed hard before raising his buckler and drawing his sword from it's resting place at his hip; it was time to get up some of that self-confidence he lacked.

As the creatures darted forward, Fintan and Melania make for the shadows to conceal themselves while Caoilainn and Sault faced the demons head-on. Standing back-to-back, the two warriors fended off attacks from the Demon Lords while the two stealthier Sheikah focused on attacking from behind. It's a solid strategy, but no matter what they're hit with the demons just keep going. Sault can feel his stamina dropping slowly, and even though he can't see Caoilainn it's a good guess that she'll run out of energy from defecting attacks soon. This battle could use a few more participants on their side, or maybe a stronger attack plan from the other two...

"Not at all," Callia says. "What's up?"

"I had the idea that we should follow them back and speak with their leaders so that we stay on good terms with them," I reply. "What do you think?"

"Hmm..." she says. "I think it's a good idea. When would we be going?"

"As soon as possible," I reply. "I don't want to lose them if we can help it."

"What's going on?" Link asks as he strolls up to us, Zelda by his side.

"We're going to follow those people back to their village to make peace. We leave as soon as possible," I say. "Everyone should gear up; grab everything you would need for a quest. Meet back here as soon as you have everything."

We all sprint back to our houses, and I grab my sword and shield. I put them on, and shove my notebook and a spare potion in the pouches on my belt. I walk back, and everyone is there, waiting.

"If we're all ready, then let's go!" I say, turning to follow where the strange people had gone. We walked a good distance away from the village, and then Link stopped all of a sudden.

"Everybody stop!" he yells, and we all stop walking.

"What is it?" I ask him quietly.

"I hear sounds of a battle ahead. And I feel a darkness coming from it," Link says. "What should we do?"

"Wait, what is that?" Karane yells, pointing to what seems to be a battle, with four smaller figures fending off four larger figures.

"That's definitely the battle..." Pipit says. "Aren't those... the strange people we met?"

"I think they are..." I say. "And from here, it doesn't look like they will last too much longer. We have to help them, right?" I ask.

Everyone nods in agreement, even Link. We all take one breath together, silently, and then we charge into the battle ahead, swords and shields raised, ready to fight.

(Sorry that was a long one, just wanted to get into the battle)

I block yet another swing from the Demon Lord I face, lips curled into a malicious sneer. Though his attack doesn't hit, I can already tell I'll end up with bruises. The strength of these pale, lean creatures is really something to marvel at.

Sault, Fintan, Melaina and I have been separated, each of us taking a Demon Lord head on. I don't dare risk a glance over, but from the grunts and heavy breathing I hear, I can make out enough.

Caught off guard, a sweep to the ankles sends me down, landing hard on my back. I let out a cry, pain shooting up and down my spine.

"Caoilann!" Melaina calls, panic clear in her tone. She can't help, however, being cut off from me completely.

The Demon Lord leered down at me, laughing deviously. Lifting one foot, he readied it to come down with force. I needed to move, I needed to do something before-

-Before I was off the ground and set down some distance from the fight. Baffled, I look up only to meet the blue eyes of the yellow-clad Hylian we'd met before.

"What-?"

"No time," he interrupts, offering me a quick smile before he brandishes a sword and runs off to join the others.

Left sitting in surprise for a moment, I shake myself back to the now, scowling. He thought he could leave me here like some helpless animal, did he?

"I don't think so," I mutter, tightening my bandages and standing up a little more slowly than I'd have liked. "...Idiot."

I don't know where the Hylians came from or what they're doing, but I'm seriously glad that they're here. I've never had to encounter Demon Lords on a one on one basis - the last time there was three of us up against one and we managed to take him out on our own. This - this is something else. And as I exchange hits with one of these horrific creatures, the thought occurs to me that maybe I need to check up on my fighting skills. I seem to be somewhat lacking.

That's when two of the Hylians dash in, brandishing weapons, and tackle the Demon Lord I was previously fighting. I stand for a few moments, looking like a spare part, before turning and trying to figure out where I can help. I can see Melaina and one of the Hylians struggling against their own Demon Lord, so decide to step in and even the odds a little.

I run up behind them, vaulting onto the horrific creatures back and wrapping my arm around his neck. I clench my fist, pulling tight around the Demon's windpipe in the hopes that I can incapacitate him for a while. But before I realise what's happening, he buckles over and with a quick jolt and the element of surprise, my back thumps into the ground, winding me and leaving me lying on the grass with my head near the Demon Lord.

I take a gasp for air. Okay, I definitely need more training.

Sault's attention is grabbed by the sound of a hard slam; turning around, he sees Fintan lying on the ground with a demon over her. Swinging at the monster's leg, the contact of his falchion makes a loud crack, and the Demon Lord howls in pain. He motions to the others, and they all disappear suddenly in a flash of black. Everything has gone quiet again, and for now the battle is over...

"Well, that was eventful, huh guys?" Sault brings up lightheartedly. Some of the group smiles and others nod, with the Hylians being especially cheerful. Something about these guys just feels like a group he would get along with, not that he hated the Sheikah and his friends, but he had only just met these people and they seemed like folks he'd known forever.

Looking down at his falchion erased the smile off his face; there was an awful crack running through the thick section of the blade where it had made contact with the Demon Lord. "Guys, take a look at this!" he said, holding up the sword. Everyone was just as shocked as he was, and when a few people looked at their own weapons there were breaks and dents in them as well. Caoilainn's fists are bleeding as if she'd been fighting a wall. "I guess we'll need to head back to the camp to fix these weapons, unless someone else knows a good blacksmith nearby..." Sault remarked.

At the battle's conclusion I turn and look at Link.

"Nothing like a good fight to get the blood flowing, right Link?" I say, exhausted.

"Yup!" he says as he sheathes his sword.

I turn and look at the strangers, and they seem to be put off by our presence. When I look at the girl I had saved earlier, she glares back at me with disdain. Now or never, I think as I walk over. I should make amends. I go over and I stand in front of them.

"First, let me apologize for how we treated you earlier. We were hasty and rash, and I speak for all of us when we say that," I say. "We meant you no harm, as I am sure you meant us no harm. We would like to speak with your elders so that we can live here in peace."

The boy named Fintan looks at the others and they nod their approval.

"Very well. Follow us," he says, turning to go.

"Wait!" I say. "Caoilainn?" She turns to face me, still angry.

"You can be angry with me, I did what I did because I didn't want you to get seriously injured or killed. I didn't want it to be my fault that one of you died," I say, looking up from the ground to her face.

"I would have been fine by myself," I replied as coolly as I was able to, even managing to direct a flicker of a smile in the Hylian's direction. Turning sharply on my heel, I make my way to where Melaina and Fintan are standing.

Still irritated, I stand with my arms crossed and a frown on my face. No one picked me up like that, whether they were trying to make amends or not. That would definitely not be permitted again.

Melaina offers me a smile that I don't return, so caught up in my own frustrated thoughts. From the corner of my eye, I notice Sault looking curiously toward the Hylians, clear interest in his eyes.

It isn't too long a walk," Fintan says after a moment, taking off with a sure stride. Melaina, Sault and I follow him swiftly, moving almost perfectly in time. I don't bother looking back to see if the Hylians have followed, the sound of their footsteps a little distance away, but steady.

Shaking my head, I tug at my bandages with an annoyed noise, wrapping them around my bloodied knuckles. To distract myself, I focus on making as little sound as possible as I move over fallen leaves and small stones.

It was a challenge, not punching the nearest tree bark.

"It's not such a bad settlement, the place we all come from," Sault explained to the Hylians. "Given that we like to stay on the move there are some pretty sturdy buildings." He'd been educating the new members of the group for a little while now. With slight injuries and everyone tired, it was a much slower journey back home than anybody would have liked, so it was Sault's hope that a bit of trivia would brighten spirits. "It's getting dark, so you might have to spend the night," he continued, "but we have plenty of tents to accommodate everyone!"

Given their expressions, it seemed the Hylians wanted to get along with the Sheikah. Those meddling Demon Lords might complicate things, but if both groups came to trust each other there was nothing they couldn't overcome. Especially with that guy Link... he was absolutely incredible in mind, valor and strength. Those demons wouldn't stand a chance.

Soon the guy named Leoni perked up. "Come to think of it," he said to Sault, "you really look like a Hylian. Any idea why you're so different?" Caoilainn twists her head back and shoots Leoni a nasty glare, but Sault waves it off. "Beats me," he replies, "I figure I'm a Sheikah in mind if not in appearance, and there's not much I can do about it. Maybe I am a Hylian, but there's no way to know right? Unless you know any ladies with missing kids or something." The Hylians all think for a moment and shake their heads sadly. "Don't worry about it." he continued, "I've made some great friends in you guys today anyways, so why brood over that?" Everyone smiled and continued talking about other things after that.

Whispers spread through the camp like ripples of water as we stroll through. I'm in the lead, setting a brisk pace, and from what I can tell the others are just behind me. I'm still a little concerned about bringing the Hylians into our camp. Sheik told us not to reveal our location to them... and though he's always very calm and collected, I've long wondered how much Sheik could bare before he finally lost his temper.

"This is our main communal building," Sault says, still incessantly rambling as we approach the Temple of Spirit. Something about these Hylians really brought him out of his shell - he's never been one to talk too much, and he's never been willing to discuss how different he is from other Sheikah. But I'm glad he's becoming a little more confident now, and I'd like to keep the Hylians around for that reason at least.

I rest one hand on the cool handle of the door, before pushing it open and stepping inside. There's the usual hubbub of activity inside: weapon crafting, preparation for the evening meal and general socialising. Sheik is stood at the far end of the room, and he turns to look at us as he enters. He takes a few steps towards us, but then the Hylians file in, and he pauses in his path. He takes a couple of moments to consider, before approaching.

"Make yourself comfortable," Sheik says by way of greetings to the Hylians. "I presume you'll be staying the night? I'm Sheik, tribal leader. Feel free to use whatever services and resources you need, I trust these four will ensure you're well looked after." He stops, turning to me. "Fintan, a word?"

I nod, and the two of us break away from the group. He leads me across the temple floor and into a smaller side room that's usually used for private prayers. He turns to me, resting his hands on his hips.

"I specifically told you not to tell the Hylians the location of our settlement. Yet you bought them here? Fintan, I hope you realise that this compromises our position - we're supposed to be shadow guardians, protecting from the background."

I nod. "I understand that. And there is no way that I would have allowed them to come here if the circumstances had been different."

"To what circumstances are you referring?" he asks.

So I recall todays events to Sheik, everything from the Hylians finding us to arriving at the camp settlement. His expression shows signs of recognition at the name Impa, but I don't dare to question it.

Once I've finished, he nods. "I understand why you did what you did. If Demon Lords somehow survived Demise's fall, then we need to work as closely as possible with the Hylians. Do you know who the Mortal Goddess and the Chosen Hero are yet?"

I consider for a moment. "Not for definite, though I've got suspicions."

"Okay," he says with a nod. "Keep up the good work,"

I leave that room feeling a little better - we may have technically failed the mission, but it still seems to ultimately be a success.

"Thanks," I say to Sault as he hands me a piece of bread. He then goes sitting by the Sheikah across the room.

They've been very friendly to us, but it seems a bit weird to me that we are allowed to stay here. They look like they are mysterious and want to stay like that. Why did they let us in?

"Bryarly?" Callia suddenly says.

"Yeah?" I reply.

"You're bleeding..." she says as she comes sitting next to me. "Sault? Can we have some bandages?"

"Of course," he says and he runs away to get some.

I look down and she's right, my arm has a rather large, thin cut across it. It doesn't look that deep, so I figure it's not that bad.

"Let me take a look," Zelda says softly as she sits in front of me. She carefully takes my arm in her hands, and looks at it.

"Zel? What are you doing?" I ask her.

She ignores me and continues to stare at the wound. Suddenly the weirdest thing happens. A faint light appears around it and the bleeding stops. The cut starts to heal, and after a few seconds, my skin looks as good as new.

"Zelda...." I whisper.

She looks at me, as surprised as I am.

"Wow..." I say, taken by surprise. "I've never seen that happen before."

"Neither have I," says Callia, who seems just as shocked as the rest of us.

"How did you do that?" I ask Zelda, opening my notebook.

"I- I don't know. When I held her arm, I just felt a warm light pass through me. I guess that light healed her," she says. I make a few notes as she talks, but I silently wonder if this has anything to do with being the 'goddess reborn'. I stand from where I was kneeling, and walk over to where Link, Pipit, and the others are standing.

"What do you think of all of this?" I say, gesturing around us.

"It's a lot bigger than I expected," Link says. "And it amazes me that almost the whole thing is portable. How do they even do that? We have trouble enough building houses that will stand permanently..."

"i hope their meals are as big as their camp," Pipit says. "Cause I'm starving!"

"Agreed," I say, followed by the growling of my stomach. Everyone laughs at that, and for a second I turn and look back at the people we fought beside today. They sit facing each other, looking as amiable as we are, talking about the days' events. I look at the girl I saved, and I guess I stared a little too long, because her friends informed her she was being stared at. As she turns, I look down at my boots, a little bit ashamed as she flashes a quick grin at me.

"Looks like someone's got a soft spot for you!" Melaina teases, poking Caoilainn in the arm. "What was his name... Leo?"

"Oh please," Caoilainn spits. "He acts like I'm some helpless little creature who needs saving. I hate being the damsel in distress."

Sault laughs. "Joke all you like, he's definitely got eyes for you!"

"New topic!" Caoilainn says, reaching out to take an apple from a fruit dish in the middle of the table.

I sit, eating in silence as my friends all converse. The Hylians make their way over, joining us at our table so that we can all eat as a communal group. The two different races converse politely, though some people are more keen to converse than others. Link, in particular, stays quiet.

"Shall we organise the sleeping arrangements?" Sault asks. "We don't have long before we should head off. We'll need a good rest after todays events."

"Well there's nine of us and four of you..." Leoni says. He looks around, before saying. "How about Fledge and Pipit with Sault, Link and I with Fintan, Bryarly, Zelda and Callia with Caoilainn, and Emzy and Karane with Melaina?"

"We can get spare bedding rolls from the tribes stock tent... we keep excess of everything in there," Sault explains.

"Sounds perfect," Zelda says.

So we spend the rest of the meal talking quietly, but my mind is elsewhere. One of the Hylians, Bryarly, had a large cut on her arm earlier. I could have sworn she was fairly badly injured... yet now her arm appears to be without a single scratch. I can't help but wonder if magic played a part in this. I thought Hylians had no magic? It couldn't have been one of the Sheikah, we possess natural magic - not healing magic. So how did the injury heal so quickly?

"Come on," I say, as the meal comes to an end. "We should turn in."

Sault feels a tug on his sleeve and turns aide to find Leoni. "Hey," he whispers, "what's the deal with that Caoilainn girl? I can't figure her out." Sault chuckles a bit in reply. "She's just really tough like that, probably the best hand-to-hand fighter you'll ever meet. Don't worry, she'll only hit you if you say something really, really dumb." Sault teased. Both of them seemed to be getting along fairly well, though it might be because he was the only Sheikah laid back enough to just chew the fat with total strangers.

The Hylians make a congregation of their tents in a clear space, setting up with the help of the Sheikah. They retire to bed and seem to fall asleep quicker than everyone else, though Sault doesn't think of it as a sign of weakness. He used to be the same way as them, because his body wasn't built for lots of running and travelling like the Sheikah. Speaking of which, he did feel a little disappointed these people didn't know about where he came from. Maybe it was silly of him to think they would; there were probably hundreds of these people somewhere else, and there could even be a fair number of parents with lost children as well. For now, he'd just keep his thoughts on other things and stick to the mission, then everything else would work out.

After a good night of sleep, I get up to see everyone already eating. I join them and after some eating and chatting, Sault and Caoilainn take Pipit and Link to see how to repair our weapons.

"Bryarly?" I turn around to see Fintan standing behind me.

"Yeah?" I ask.

"Can I ask you something in private?" he asks.

I try to look around a bit to see if anyone of my friends has heard it, but they are all busy doing something.

I nod, a bit confused.

He takes me to a room next to this one, and sits down on a pillow.

"Please," he gestures.

I sit down in front of him.

"Can I see your arm please?" he asks.

"What?" I repond, very confused.

"Please?" he insists.

That's when I realise he saw the wound yesterday. And now it's gone. This isn't good.

She grabs instinctively at her arm, as if protecting it from me.

"I... uhh..." she stutters. "I would, but it was injured yesterday and it hurts when I roll up my sleeves and-"

"You and I both know that's not true," I say. She doesn't say anything for a few moments, just looks down at her feet. "I saw the wound on your arm, and it vanished later that day. What happened?"

She's refusing to meet my eye.

"Bryarly please," I insist. Again, nothing. I sigh. "I swear to you I'm not going to hurt you, I won't do anything. I just need to see your arm."

Eventually she gives in, rolling up the sleeve of her tunic and showing me the skin of her arm. Just like I thought, there's not a single scratch on her skin.

"How did you do that?" I ask.

She doesn't say anything. "Fine then..." I say. I reach out, taking her arm in my hand and resting the palm of my other hand on where the wound should be. She looks a little bit confused, but doesn't object. I close my eyes, allowing myself to space out of the real world and into my palace of balance. I draw lines between my mind, body, and soul, completing the perfect connection, before exploring the space. I can feel remnants of magic radiating from the wound. Not just any magic, this is sacred magic, holy magic. I pull myself out of the palace as quickly as possible, powering through the water until I break out on the surface. I open my eyes, taking in a gasp of breath and dropping her arm like it burns my skin.

"Where did you get that kind of magic?" I ask. She hurriedly rolls down her sleeve, looking guilty. I move forward, sitting on my heels in the space between us. "Bryarly, whatever that is... it's not natural. It's very important that you tell me where that magic came from."
