T1g's D&D Isle of Dread Campaign

Here is a general summary of what happens, I will let Saha, Necro, and/or Emma fill in any blanks I leave out.

For reference:

Sahaqiel = Amon

Emsomniac = Lia

Knuckle = Atticus

ElwayGuy = Rex

Necropolis is a substitute player. For this session, he controlled both Rex and Atticus, but all RPing was being done as Rex

Rakasta have a small party as a thank you to the party for saving Dargo's life with the medicine they got from the phanaton camp (see hot springs episode).

Party takes this opportunity to ask the Rakasta questions they have about themselves, the island, etc, as well as talk a little bit about themselves.

[more detail from the players would be nice because i forgot specifically which questions you guys asked, and you should probably post what questions you asked and what answers you got because EG and Knuckle probably should know them]

The Rakasta talk about how the lizardfolk have recently been launching surprise attacks on the Rakasta, when previously they would only attack if the Rakasta wandered into their territory, or upset them in some way. This coincides with the rise of a Lizardfolk King, a ruthless chieftain who united all the tribes in the swamps. They start to discuss possible strategies of dealing with the king, but the biggest issue is that they all go an attack without endangering the children, and they can't divide their numbers because they are pretty sure that is exactly what the lizard king is waiting for them to do.

Party volunteers to assassinate the king, and they formulate a plan. They ask the Rakasta to make them two canoes, which they use to quickly row their way through the swampy lands, and due to luck, they manage to spot a patrol of lizardfolk, and use them to locate the cave that the king lives in. (Saha I will help you update your map with this stuff later)

At this point there was some stealth shenanigans. They were in a foggy swamp, they saw a torch being carried north, this part was kind of shitty to do because the GOOD fog of war settings on roll20 require me to pay for it. The party does bad at sneaking, the torch stops and starts moving towards them, Crit climbs a nearby tree and the party follows her lead. The party snuffs out the lizardfolk's torch, kills him, relights the torch, and gives it to Amon, who disguises himself as the lizardfolk. Mind you, he can't speak draconic so this disguise requires a lot of bluffing. The party kills the dude who was standing by the cave, who went to see what was wrong with his friend who walked out to the side and disappeared. Party goes into the cave, still planning on assassinating the Lizard King.

They get inside the cave, there is some stuff that I was utterly baffled by and I feel like one of the other players would better be able to explain what happened at this point. Something involving Rex and Atticus posing as missionaries being escorted by a lizardfolk? It was all kind of silly, but the lizardfolk buy the bluff miraculously. Also Lia was a cat sneaking around the place during this time, so she scopes out the cave. They manage to get lead into the lizard king's room, only to realize that it was a trap. Due to the fact that they let one lizardfolk escape the King already knew of the party's presence on the island, and he had a detailed description of their appearance, as well as their abilities. The king starts talking to the group, while scanning over him, until he makes eye contact with Crit. The moment the two of them see each other, you could feel the world come to a standstill.

Crit flies into a frenzy, running straight past the king's men (who let her pass without taking an oppurtunity attack), and attacks the king. In her frenzy, she misses both of her attacks. The king slices his finger on his spear (which is not a normal looking spear btw), before muttering an incantation and throwing the spear into the ground. Strange runes on the spear glow bright red, and the spear lets out a howl, with a malevolent aura surrounding it. The king had been standing in the center of a ring of fresh blood, which comes to life, forming countless needles which begin to dart around in a ring around the king, forming a barrier between the party and Crit.

What follows is a 2 and a half hour boss fight. Over the course of the fight, the king delivers an evil speech (in 6 second chunks, the equivalent of a round). Only Rex and Atticus speak Draconic, so only they know what he actually says in the speech (I PM'd it to them). The regular Lizardfolk King was way too weak for this party of badasses, so I gave him extra abilities to make this actually worthy of a boss fight

The main thing to note about this fight is the Bloody Barrier. This thing is basically a weaker version of Blade Barrier, a 6th level spell. A creature who attempts to pass through the barrier must make a Dexterity Save for half damage (or no damage, i forget what i did). But what was more interesting was the fact that the party abused this as a method of killing off lizardfolk. Amon kept using Thunderwave to kill guys, and if not kill them, push them through the barrier, letting the damage from that kill them. This was totally brilliant, but it backfired twice.

1.) Amon pushes one of the tougher stone club folk through with Thunderwave, but he takes minimum damage from both the spell and the barrier. He proceeds to assist the king in the fight with Crit for practically the entire battle.

2.) Rex attempts to grapple one of the Lizardfolk, and drag him into the barrier, holding him there. He fails. The Lizardfolk then in turn, grapples Rex, and holds him inside the Bloody Barrier. Rex gets knocked out after failing to break free twice (I ruled that being grappled and held in the barrier meant you failed the save automatically).

Sahaqiel runs up and successfully dislodges the spear, but it's aura does not go away, nor does the barrier dissipate. The king moves up to Sahaqiel and knocks him out.

The other thing to note is, despite the high lizardfolk count, (there were 15 not counting the King), most of them died from Amon's Thunderwave and Lia's Moon Beam. So besides the two remaining lizardfolk, mentioned above, and the King, there are no other enemies. Even the reinforcements that showed up didn't last very long.

I should note at this point that Emma has been using Moonbeam in literally every fight so far, ever since she realized it was OP. As a counteract, I gave the King an extra ability that allowed him to take no damage on successful save from Moonbeam, and Half damage on failed save, nerfing the ability. He saved literally every time she tried to hit him with it. In addition, I gave the king the ability to use his reaction to counter ranged attacks (this includes attempting to hit him with the moonbeam) with a blood missile, which is basically just a 1d8+1 attack you make a dexterity saving throw in order to avoid. I gave him that ability because I considered the possibility of the party just doing nothing but trying to hit him from outside the barrier.

At this point Crit is still in a frenzy, literally concentrating on nothing but murdering the king. They keep exchanging blows with their claws, dodging and weaving and slashing and shit. Literal clash of the titans. Crit even puppying Crits twice during the fight and the king kept on going.

EVENTUALLY, the party gets all healed, no one is unconsious and all the lizardfolk are dead. As the king falls, he shoots a hateful glance towards Amon, before muttering another incantation. All the needles that formed the Bloody Barrier combine to form 8 spears, which all converge on Amon's location.

Amon rolls a 3 on his dexterity save

Before the spears pierce Amon, Crit, who is near him, pushes him out of the way, and gets hit by the spears instead. Crit and the King both fall to the ground.

And this is where we left off because it was almost 3 am

The party basically wrapped up where they left off. Crit is not in fact, dead, she survived 8d8 damage while she was low on health. I actually thought she was going to die rescuing Amon. She did not however, and continues to surprise me with her tenacity and badassery. Anyway, the party heals Crit, she regains consciousness, glances at the slain Lizard King, and the not slain Amon, smiles, and then passes out again. The party decides to take a long rest in the now empty cave.

CRIT ALSO GAINED A LEVEL.  I DIDN'T MENTION IT BEFORE BECAUSE I WANTED TO KEEP YOU ON YOUR TOES.

So the party heals their wounds, they find some treasure in the form of money and opals in the cave. Necro brings up something about Crit's past that he overheard the Lizard King talking about during their fight, that Crit and the Lizardking met at some point 10 years ago, and how the Lizard King probably killed RB. Crit gets a pained look on her face when he finishes speaking, and starts to leave the cave. The party starts to follow her, thinking they are heading back to the Rakasta camp.

Crit takes them eastward instead.

The party follows, and travels through the mountains before reaching a cliff that looked over the sea. Out on this cliff, there is a very crude grave marker made out of a wooden plank, clearly very old and worn out. Crudely carved into the plank is the letters RB

Sahaqiel: "I am trying to figure out how to feel about this"

T1g: "Wanna ask Crit how she feels about this?"

Sahaqiel: "Ok"

T1g: "Crit is crying right now"

So Crit cries for a while, Rex and Amon use their cut of the treasure (namely the 500 gp opals they had) to decorate the grave. They also probably did some other stuff to the grave too. Emma however, is a total dick and does not do anything at all. Which is strange because I actually thought she was going to like, use her druid powers to make flowers bloom at the grave or something. But no, she is too busy making sure no one tries to steal her opals.

Crit eventually stops crying, stands in front of the grave, and performs some gestures with her arms that the party is not familiar with for about 10-20 seconds. She then wipes away her tears, and leaves. The party follows.

The party gets back to the lizardfolk cave, its dark again (mountain travel takes time ok). Amon asks the party if they can take a break in the cave for a day so he can cast a spell. They do that. Sahaqiel gains the service of a familiar, a Fey Cat. Or as I like to call it, F3 (Fey Feline Familiar). The cat is not very friendly to other people. They also have the Lizard King's spear at this point, but they realize they cannot use it properly, because they do not know the incantations he uttered while he was using the spear.

The party heads back to the canoes the next morning, and retrace their route to get back to the Rakasta camp. They get attacked by a humongous carnivorous ape, which i would have them fight if it wasn't for the fact that I wanted to keep this session short. I tell them to roll for luck. Someone rolls a 20. The green dragon once again swoops down and snatches up the ape. Carrying it off to the north. The Ape probably puts up a fight or something, since its probably almost the size of the dragon, but whatever.

The Rakasta ask if they succeeded, Crit nods in confirmation, and there is much rejoicing. They tell the party that if they are ever in need, they will do what they can to help. The party agrees that they will head towards the southeast, in an attempt to find the humans that they hear live in that direction.

The party takes a long rest again at the Rakasta Camp. End of Day 8.

And at this point, I get to write the second story arc / plot line / quest chain / whatever. So no really crazy sessions (like this entire lizardfolk king thing) are planned yet, but I sure as hell have a general game plan going. Expect some more awesome stuff to happen though.

If you want me to join, post on here when you're having a session! I can't always be on skype, cause it's kinda distracting. I was under the impression this would be on the weekend, not on weekdays when I have next to no free time...

Oh my bad, I will keep that in mind during the future.

Basically, for the sake of progress, I decided that, if 3/4 players are available, and I have more campaign written (not the filler) I would just have a session. Because once a week would make the campaign progress too slowly for my tastes

Also, while necro was playing as you, he gave you the best accent ever.

Right now EG, we are going to try to see if we can play tonight, but due to the fact that me and my project teammate are going to spend the afternoon trying to finish an assignment thats due tomorrow, do not count on it. It is totally still possible, If things go well, we will only need to take a few hours to finish the assignment.

But nothing ever goes well in Computer Science

Actually my teammates seem to have covered for me a lot since last night and now a session in a few hours seems really plausible.
