My Summer Movie List

That's interesting, I always thought the Daniel Craig version of the girl with the dragon tattoo was the original. I'll definitely keep that in mind for future reference, I wouldn't mind seeing a movie in swedish with english subtitles. When you say Skyfall, do you mean the james bond trilogy that came out in the past couple of years? I never saw any of those three movies and I never knew they were a trilogy until recently. I've never seen Scott Pilgrim and probably should, and I've definitely seen Fight Club. That's a great movie. If In Bruges is really THAT good, I'll go add it to my list now.

In Bruges is certainly worth your time, but I won't talk it up any more than that.

I didn't know Skyfall was a trilogy either. I was just talking about the Skyfall movie itself because it's a good action movie, and you commented about wanting to watch a good action movie. If there's any trilogy connection in it, it's vague enough that it didn't make any impact on how I watched the movie.

I watched Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon with one of my roommates yesterday. I for some reason always thought this movie was a bruce lee film that would have come out forty years ago. Turns out it actually came out in 2000. I have a lot of weird feelings about this film. The plot was ridiculous, had the most absurd pacing, and often relied on us assuming/knowing information we really wouldn't know, to the point where about an hour in I gave up on understanding what was going on and just waited for fight scenes to happen.

I mean, I understand the plot for what it was supposed to be. I'm pretty sure it was supposed to be directly adapted from the way older folktales and fables would be told. And my roommate pointed out the fact that most of the confusing things, like the governors daughter all of a sudden being out on the run with the super sword as a vigilante type woman, were probably just a result of china having different story telling structure than us, so where we look at it confused, they look at it and understand already that that's clearly what happened. I dunno how true that is though. The movie spent a lot of time introducing characters and plot points and then never having anything to do with them ever again. I don't think I ever clearly understood what was going on at the beginning of the movie with the sword being stolen and why, or the politics of the situation that were apparently involved, but somewhere back there the plot changed to whatever was going on at the end of the movie somehow. Just trying to comprehend what was going on in the movie as a whole was a rough ride, and still is for me, now that the movie is finished.

But it was still a good movie, and I understand that the plot clearly isn't what everybody loves it for. The wire fighting looked ridiculous at times, but that's to expect from the movie that pioneered it. And they often did hilarious things that would make me laugh out loud in the middle of a fight, like when governor's daughter and legendary swordsdude started fighting on those swaying treetops. But that kind of ridiculous high octane nonsense is the kind of thing I enjoy. The lulls between fight scenes would get pretty boring, but when they finally did happen they were full of adrenaline and style. It was a lot of fun in the end. Definitely not what I was expecting, but I would still recommend it.

Wuxia movies like Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon tend to be on the ridiculous side of things by western sensibilities and also have a lot of plot and setting details made with their native audience in mind. It takes a different mindset to get the most out of them. And yeah, House of Flying Daggers is another good example, and so is Hero.

Also, the last three James Bond movies aren't really a trilogy. Quantum of Solace is direct a sequel to Casino Royale, in that it follows up on specific plot points unresolved in the previous film, which is very rare to have in James Bond movies, but Skyfall has nothing to do with the overarching storyline or themes of those two movies. Technically it's a sequel to them but calling them a trilogy assumes a bit much. James Bond is weird like that.

Oh, and I can vouch for David Fincher's Girl with the Dragon Tattoo being good, but I have yet to see the original Swedish movies. But I'd read the book before seeing the more recent movie so I plan on reading the other two before seeing anything else.

The opening to Girl with the Dragon Tattoo was cool, but I felt like it was too James Bond. And Daniel Craig being in it didn't help that either.

Just watched Game of death. It's a hilariously bad movie and I feel like I got cheated out of watching a real bruce lee film. Now I need somebody to recommend a real bruce lee film to me so I can feel better. Maybe Enter the Dragon?

Also I watched the original forty minutes of the film on youtube, even though it was in a shoddy frame rate and dubbed over poorly for some reason, but I still liked it more, with bruce lee talking and two of his henchmen doing his fighting for him so he can observe how his opponents fight and can beat them accordingly.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is also a good movie, if you ever feel like watching it. It's a movie about love and heartbreak; philosophical romance movie with very broken and emotionally insecure central characters. Sci-fi elements but mostly set in reality. It also stars Jim Carey as lead, playing a very different character than the kind he's usually associated with.

It's a good movie. I'm rewatching it right now.

Did I not mention how game of death was filming when bruce died? Its a mess, but the bruce bits are good at least. Fists of fury is a great revenge story, and enter the dragon is generally considered to be the great kung fu movie masterpiece. Also if you go with fists of fury, get the cantonese dub. All of them are dubbed over in post but they were actually speaking cantonese so the lip flap fits pretty well.

No, you mentioned to me he died mid filming. So did everyone else, but I figured it would be something like mostly bad content and then some brilliant content, so I suffered the miserable first half to wait for the final bits, but when I got to the last twenty minutes everybody loves it was just the parts of the movie everybody liked, chopped up still. I was expecting to see Bruce with his two cronies taking on everyone in the tower, but they even edited out those two, and tried to make it just bruce vs. bad guys.

I was introduced to the film itself in a weird english class I took where the teacher tried to explain to us that we should approach our writing in the same way that bruce lee approaches fighting; like water. I get what he was saying, but I'm pretty sure he was just looking for an excuse to show the game of death in class to us, starting with bruce and his two dudes fighting the nunchucks guy. I thought it was a really great couple of sequences and I decided I wanted to see it one day, but it wasn't even as good in the actual movie because they butchered that part too. I ended up just closing the movie, finding the twenty minutes I was looking for on youtube, and watching that instead.

If Enter the Dragon really is the masterpiece of kung fu cinema, then that's what I'll see. But not next on my list, because I want to see doctor strangelove.

Its really a classic. Fist of fury is also really great though. It has the famous Bruce lee soul punch

Like, clearly he's just punched his soul out.
