Farewell (and good riddance?) to status updates: Your thoughts

What did you think about the status update feature? Enjoyed it? Sad to see it go? Or maybe not so much?

I imagine that while it was handy to have, we'll all be fine moving on to using Talk and R&R for posting about our lives.

If anything I'll miss being able to make Twitter-like posts; off-hand jokes that I just want to make without a need for context. There will be a bit of a gap there. I wouldn't really do it in Talk because that just seems self indulgent, while if it was something disposable as an update, I'd feel better about posting it. So I'll miss that.

On the other hand, people would often have full-scale discussions there without taking the initiative to move it somewhere else where it can be a bit more organised and easy to return to.

I understand the problems it may be causing, but I like them

I thought they were useless. If you wanna talk about stuff, go to the Talk thread. :P

Oh wow it's gone. I know that I was advocating sticking with changes. But like... If we have to disregard new and convenient features and "progress", then aren't we kind of acknowledging that the forums are obsolete? To downgrade back to the forums with no statuses kind of makes the forums seem like a novelty.

I disagree with taking them away. But whatever. Are we gonna delete the irc channel too???

Uh, yeah? People talk in the IRC channel. They talk on IRC when they could be talking here.

Oh I liked it because I often had something that was not important enough to be posted in a thread

Also I could see it on the front page without having to open a new thread

And it was a good gauge of how active the forums were

The problem was it was taking away from the forum, not adding to it. Way too many "status updates" were being added when it should have been a thread. I'm hoping that by removing it, it will re-train people to use the forums and create new topics or post on existing ones.

There is also the blogs section, http://www.hyrule.net/forum/blogs/, which would have been suitable for most of the updates as well.

The IRC channel adds to the site as it's another way to talk with everyone.

This is not to say that they can't come back, however for now I'd like people to actually start using the forum again.

I think maybe we should just try and be more open to using Talk as a dumping ground for chatter. It's what we used to do after all.

You know what will attract new members? Less features!! Also rupees that you can't spend and hearts that mean nothing! YEAH!

I don't understand your attitude at all. Remember what we used to have before hearts? No? They were plain green squares. We just replaced them with something more appropriate. It took little effort. Small changes.

We're still working out the Rupees. They are a work in progress. Chill out.

Our goal isn't to be Twitter. It doesn't enhance the forum. It promotes what we see every day: "Last post yesterday at", "Last post May 29" etc.

If you understand the problem, then stop passive-aggressively complaining about it or come up with an alternative.

The statuses didn't really add anything to hnet as a forum, though, so nbd.

Our goal isn't to be Twitter.

First of all, Twitter doesnt even work that way? I mean kinda but not exactly. But what I dont get is when you say you want more people to be here (you want us to be a more popular site) yet you scoff at Twitter despite it being one of the MOST popular sites.

I honestly dont care about the statuses. Like really, I dont. I just think its really dumb that the admins, the people put in charge of our existence, are more into cheap gimmicks than actual progress. Facebook, like it or hate it, adds real features that make social interaction more enjoyable and easy. You guys add hearts and rupees, and take away stuff that we actually use. uhhhh.

See, that's what gets on my nerves. Instead of just stating your opinion, you feel the need to add this layer of passive-aggression like we don't get it. If you stated your opinion without being passive-aggressive and stuck up about it, then I wouldn't be pissy.

So yes, we do want to be stronger as a forum. Tappy and I did not literally sit down and say "heh people use status updates let's just replace it with hearts and rupees heh". The hearts were a low-effort alternative to our green square pips. They look neat, they serve the same purpose as the green pips, only they fit the theme better. The Rupees were a fix to an old system that didn't work anyway, and Tappy is trying to reestablish the shop and Rupee transfer. I am completely sure you know that presentation is a big part of accessibility, and we're trying to make small changes and plan over time rather than just try everything all at once, get burnt out, and leave the site looking half-finished.

The statuses and the profile appearance are two separate issues entirely. I said we are not aiming to be Twitter, because we are not Twitter. Statuses work very much like Twitter. Imagine if Twitter had a forum, and on the side was a Twitter feed. One takes away from the strength of the other. We are attempting to strengthen the place as a forum, not as a microblogging site.
