the guard doesn't make sense though because the guard's innermost part is the vulnerable metally part...

Not if the entire light saber hilt is made of Mandalorian Iron.

Wait, so, canon has changed? I know the EU used to be canon. It definitely operated on a tiered structure with the movies as highest, but something in the books was canon as long as it didn't contradict something in the movies. I just assumed the tier system would say the same but any books that contradict stuff said in the new movies would simply be non-canon.

Just think of it like this. The EU got thrown in a barrel. When they need something from the EU barrel they'll grab it and fit it into something new. Otherwise everything after the cut off point, Rebels, and Clone wars are all canon
