The plot is so silly though... Especially if you've read the books....

It's nice to play a non-canon game once in a while, though. Gives some flexibility in story telling.

 

Hyrule Warriors, for example, is a nice departure from normal Zelda games. It's non-canon, but still respects the lore. Same with Shadow of Mordor. There are a few weird things (an elf wraith, for one) but overall the game seems to respect the lore quite a bit. Most reviewers said the story was a high point.
