Welcome to Fascinating Facts, the place to post facts that are fascinating.

Have you ever seen a kid hold their breath as a way of forcing adults to do what they want?

Just let them.

Nobody has ever died from  holding their breath. The worst thing to happen is they'll pass out and breathe normally.

Pretty sure everyone has erectile tissue in their noses. That's why we only ever breathe out of one at a time.

Did they need some kind of special uncanning machine? The absurdity of this fact is... uncanny.

Was going to make a thread about this, but this thread looked good for this sort of thing:

No one could see the color blue until modern times. The article talks about how there was no word for the color blue until pretty recently. Interesting IMO.

It was also something that was discussed in a psychology class that I took recently. Many cultures didn't have a word for the color blue. Some cultures only have two color distinctions: dark and light. We have eleven color categories: dark (black), light (white), red, green, yellow, blue, brown, purple, pink, orange, and gray.

From Wikipedia:

In languages with fewer than the maximum eleven color categories, the colors followed a specific evolutionary pattern. The pattern is as follows:

  1. All languages contain terms for black and white.
  2. If a language contains three terms, then it contains a term for red.
  3. If a language contains four terms, then it contains a term for either green or yellow (but not both).
  4. If a language contains five terms, then it contains terms for both green and yellow.
  5. If a language contains six terms, then it contains a term for blue.
  6. If a language contains seven terms, then it contains a term for brown.
  7. If a language contains eight or more terms, then it contains terms for purple, pink, orange, and/or gray.

And yes this is unrelated to whatever "viral" dress picture is happening on tumblr

Listen my children and you will hear of the Midnight Ride of Paul Revere.......Ha!

In truth Revere never completed his famous ride a man (and fellow Connecticut native) Israel Bissell took up the slack from Revere.
