A little late to respond, but oh well. I didn't know you were a Methodist too! I love Wesley Foundations in general, even though I'm having a hard time at this one in particular. I find them to be an extremely underutilized part of the Methodist Church, especially in the sense that basically nobody talks about them. I don't think I ever heard about one in my many years of youth group, which is kind of crazy! But once I did get involved in college, it really did change my life.

    Breath of the Wild
Breath of the Wild came out several days ago, yet there's no thread about it yet! How sad. But fear not, I'll start the discussion!
I didn't preorder a Switch, but I called around on release night and found a GameStop that had a handful of unclaimed systems left. I drove there as quickly as possible and stood in line for seven hours to claim the last one in stock, then drove home and immediately turned on Breath of the Wild with my wife. I let her play first, because I try to be a good husband.
My wife is not a gamer at all. She does enjoy the Sims, and she likes Mario Kart, but she's never been into these large, single-player games with hours of content and combat. But my wife absolutely loves Breath of the Wild. Though I'm sad to admit it, she's played a few hours more than I have, and I'm one of those die-hard, lifelong Zelda fans (go figure, right?) who has been looking forward to this game for years. I remember the first time I rented Majora's Mask, my first Zelda game, and the first time I beat Ocarina of Time. I remember borrowing a Gameboy from my friend to link my copies of the Oracle games. I remember the hype for the Nintendo Revolution and the excitement when the first then-unnamed Twilight Princess trailer released.
I feel as though Breath of the Wild is the most satisfying one yet.
I was unhappy with Skyward Sword for a lot of reasons, so I restrained myself from getting too excited about this one. Honestly, I didn't have any intention of buying it or a Switch until Christmas, but I'm so glad I did. The game is amazing in every aspect, and I honestly have been riding a new-Zelda high since it released that I can't really describe. It's so different, yet so definitely Zelda nonetheless.
What are y'all thinking so far? Love it? Hate it? Don't yet have it? Let's hear your thoughts!

It's been a rough year or so, honestly. I'm profoundly dissatisfied with my job and my school, which really starts to take a toll after a while. I'm constantly tired, lethargic, or anxious, probably because I'm trapped in what's essentially a six-million person metroplex yet have no close friends or real colleagues. I don't have any coworkers, really, and the other people in campus ministry are so much older than me that it's hard to consider them friends rather than mentors or something. My wife also hates her job, she hates commuting two hours every day, and she hates being so far from her family, which has her pretty on-edge much of the time. We're both very ready to move on from this phase in our lives and actually get settled into where we intend to be long-term.
On a brighter note, I did finish a draft of my fantasy novel. 105,000 words, in need of a good deal of editing. But the fact that I wrote a cohesive story that is, in my opinion at least, pretty good is somewhat shocking to me still. I also got a Switch and Breath of the Wild, which has legitimately added joy back into both my life and my wife's. I could go on and on about why that is, but I'll just say it's more than the escapism that it can provide -- it captures a sense of adventure and, in a weird way, hope in a manner that is carrying over beyond the screen. It's funny, charming, exciting, and so many other things, and it's been a good break from the monotonous dissatisfaction we've felt so much recently.
I'm very sorry to hear that, Knuckle. How are you holding up?

Yeah, I totally love it! The United Methodist Church calls their campus ministries "Wesley Foundations," and the one I went to during my undergrad was a truly great place that helped me get through some rough times. The one I'm serving is on a Community College, so it has a lot of different challenges that I'm working to figure out, but I'm meeting some great students. I've been there for a year and a half now. I would love to stay in the world of campus ministry, though there are a lot of variables that will come up once I finish seminary to determine what type of ministry I'll end up in.
My wife and I are looking to move to Alabama, which is where she's from, so my future will largely be determined by what they have available there. I don't know how interested they are in Wesley Foundations there, unfortunately, but I would be perfectly happy to get appointed to a conventional church as well. Basically, I'll go where they send me!

Congratulations! Wow, that's so exciting! How's your mobility come along?

Congratulations! That's all very exciting. I got married about a year and a half ago and am working my way through Seminary right now. Hopefully I'll finish in Spring of 2018, but that depends on what classes they offer each semester. It's kind of tough for my wife and me, since we're so far away from both of our families (9 hours from hers, 6 from mine), but we're making it through. I'm running a campus ministry at a small community college, which is a blessing despite its challenges (all my students have jobs or families, which means they can't come to the same kinds of things as students at a 4-year school). It's been a good, busy time for me as well, I'd say!

I know, it's pretty quiet these days! Between work, school, and writing, I find myself without a lot of free time. How have you been? What's new with you?
  8. Shadowknight added a post in a topic What's your current ringtone?

(This is a super delayed response, but so it goes.) Man, I'be been a fan of The Dear Hunter since like 2008! Act I was what pulled me into the world of rock operas, which I was all about for several years. I'm really enjoying their newest album, I must say.

I drop by on occasion, usually when my grad school is wearing me down. Like Teto, this place was really important to me during my formative years, and it holds a lot of sentimental value as a result. When adult life starts to get depressing, it's nice to come back here, into a space that uniquely preserves that memory of youth. It's not actually just the stuff I posted here, either, but everything that was happening in my life around those times.

Plus, I often find myself missing y'all.

I use the intro from a mewithoutYou song, Watermelon Ascot, but I don't usually keep the sound turned on. The vibration pattern when my phone rings is part of my school's fight song, though, which I still really enjoy.

Yep, it's still here. Some people still come around from time to time, but it seems as though a lot of the old active members have moved into adulthood and the responsibilities that brings. I try really hard to come back, but it seems like there's always something new to do with work or grad school, so there are pretty big gaps in my activity.

That would definitely be interesting! I expect it will at least have something akin to the owl statues in Majora's Mask, which allow you to move quickly between regions once you learn a certain song. I'm hoping for a better musical instrument than we got in Skyward Sword, though I don't feel like that's asking very much. I'm surprisingly excited about this game, and I love it. Like, I remember getting pumped up for Twilight Princess at the same time as the "Revolution" console. When they released the first trailer, I spent the whole day on the phone with my friends talking about how awesome it looked. I may not have done quite that with the new one, but I definitely texted everybody who would care and raved about it enough to annoy my wife.
I never bought a Wii U, but I'm already tempted to buy the new console even if this is the only game I get for it.

I'm unbelievably excited. It's been a rough year, and I've been more stressed out than I realized, but seeing this video calmed my fried nerves. There's a lot of cool stuff that you can see in other videos, so it's just getting better by the minute.

Thanks! Because I took a one-week intensive last week (9AM-5PM every day for a graduate-level course), I haven't gotten to write as much as I hoped this month. I'm at ~40K words, which is the length of a short novel in some genres, and I'm not quite halfway through the plot. I'm hoping to end around 100K, and I'm hoping to finish my first draft by August so that I can work on editing and the such for the rest of the year.
It's been interesting to write, for sure. When the narrator leaves the castle for the first time, it's really a turning point for everything. The castle where he was held makes it seem like the kingdom is repressive and bleak, but remnants of native customs and a unique appreciation for the supernatural permeate each town they pass through. Honestly, it's kind of cool seeing the story take on a life of its own.
  15. Shadowknight added a post in a topic What is your most recent purchase?

I just spent a month's pay on my bill for 3 hours of school this Summer! Seminary is so expensive, which seems so wrong to me. Pastors don't make that much money!
