Zuzu: Here's an interesting theory I heard on 4chan a few days ago - forgive me if the following image frightens you.....

    Image

So, basically the theory is; the above picture is scary, no? And it is probable that most humans would find the above image frightening or at the very least unsettling, correct? Is it something to do with the pale skin, or the dark sunken eyes sockets, or the no visible eyes, or is it the body in a strange position that strikes us as peculiar? Well, you could say it was all of the above - but the whole entire point is, What is it that originally gave humans an instinctual fear for things that had these characteristics or features?

I have several theories myself, some of them deal with nightmares, dreams & Out of body experiences, I also have some theories on sociology and humans in general. I'll try to remember to post some of these soon.

CO: It's most likely because it looks human, with enough of the features removed to make it something out of the nightmares locked in the human consciousness. You already pointed out the eyes, or lack of, but there's also the fact that it has no nose, the position makes it seem to be just the torso and head, i.e. they're dead. Also, you can see with the hair that gravity is working right, but if you look at the bloodstain, it flows upwards. Another thing probably would be the skin as you mentioned, which, in addition to being pale, almost seems to be like a putty (especially at the neck, which appears stretched out) again emphasizing that it's not alive. I'd have to guess that something in the human subconscious says It's human. It's alive while your conscious mind says it's dead. I don't want to be near that thing. There might be some other reasons, like where and what time period and what economy and a whole host of other things we were raised in or with.

I believe I may have answered the wrong question, but I'll leave it at that for now.
