Also, I could've sworn that I heard somewhere that "Koopa" means "annoying" in Japanese....

Mario was originally called Jump Man in Donkey Kong. He was named Mario in the US because of his resemblence to NOA's landlord at the time. Luigi was named after a pizza resturant NOA employees ate at. I heard that on History Channels History of Video Games special. They also talked at length about Zelda.
