Google sticks it to China.

Ladies and gentlemen, you are now witnessing a landmark moment. Look at the clock, take a good look around you and absorb your surroundings, because history is being made. Google has just published a statement with thinly-veiled disgrace for the Chinese government. While it's not said directly -- perhaps for fear of serious retaliation -- the wording definitely implies that the Chinese government or its agencies has hacked Google's infrastructure, performed surveillance and stolen its intellectual property.

Google goes on to say that the primary focus of the attack was its Gmail service. But it gets murkier: it was a targeted attack on the email accounts of Chinese human rights activists. And to add insult to injury: U.S.-, Europe- and China-based users who are advocates of human rights in China have been routinely accessed by third parties. In other words, someone (the Chinese security agency?) has phished for account details or installed backdoor/trojan malware on these advocates' computers.

Ultimately, in an act that is surely designed to extol their primary tenet, virtue and slogan 'don't be evil', Google is now planning to remove its censoring of the Internet for Chinese users. "[...] We will be discussing with the Chinese government the basis on which we could operate an unfiltered search engine within the law, if at all. We recognize that this may well mean having to shut down Google.cn, and potentially our offices in China."

Remember the day, for this is finally the day when a corporation sticks it to an entire nation. The largest nation in the world. Google's sure got balls.

It's the story that keeps getting crazier and crazier! First Google -- a corporation! -- sticks a finger up at an entire country (the largest in the world), then it comes to light that China has been operating a vast malware-distributing espionage botnet -- and now the White House publicly comes out in favor of Google!

That the American government is stepping in can only mean that the ramifications of Google's maneuvering are potentially catastrophic. Friendship and agreements between the Western world and China have always been tentative and capitalism-driven at best, but for the White House to actually get behind Google and ask China for an explanation -- to potentially drive a wedge between the two most powerful countries in the world over a search engine -- well, we're going to be in for a wild ride.

This might just be preliminary strikes of the cyber war that Western nations and superpowers have been gearing up for in the last few years.

Thoughts?

'Cause I think this is hilarious.

I feel sorry for China. I mean, it's inconvenient enough to have things censored out in your Google searches, but to not have Google at all?

Such a sad life to have.

I know.

I went like a month without Google because of a trojan. ;/

The Chinese gov't did, not China. ;(

I realize what I titled the thread, but it's more of a context sort of thing. I took your words as saying China as a nation sucks, which would be p. mean. I meant government.

The Chinese themselves are great people. But their government? If they hadn't blocked 95% of the websites out there, making it impossible to get any news, they would have been overthrown a long time ago. And with a staggering amount of human rights violations already recorded, it's no wonder something as extreme as this would happen.

Oh, and for a little bit of irony: the national anthem is "March of the Volunteers".

Anyways, go Google!

Yes, there is a lot wrong with communism. I'm very educated in the subject and have taken a course in International Relations as well as studied the political form of a communist nation.

Now Socialism, there is nothing wrong with.

Communism at its heart means well for its people. It sounds really cool, but it's really impractical, which is why it pretty much only worked on a small scale in hippie convents and the like. The issue is a human factor. We're not all perfect. So no, I don't think there is anything wrong with Communism. There is something wrong with people, and that's no fault of Communism.

There are 2 inherent problems with communism, and both are human. The first is greed, you see this in play in the uppers who are controlling who gets what and how much, the second is that there is no personal incentive to work towards bettering anything, If I get the same pay for just barely pssing, and acing with flying colors and being the best, guess which one happens?

Oh, I agree that communism means no harm. But it's not realistic to think people will mold their nature to fit a social structure so easily. That is the large flaw in communism -- a utopia is unobtainable because we cannot change human nature. In a realistic view, and as unpleasant as it might be to think about, we cannot do away with the flaws of humans. A political and social structure needs to account for human ambition, greed and corruption or it will be, as communism has proved itself to be, a failure. China may indeed owe it's relative success due to the fact that it has clearly strayed from Socialist values.

So in my conclusion, there is something wrong with people, and it's communism's fault for not accounting for said fault.
