If you go there before scaling Death Mountain and beating Dodongo's Cavern, you get the Hylian Shield. Well whats the important item after the Hylian Shield? BOMBS!!! :D

So the chest either contains a shield or bombs. Two items that you get early in the game.

Y'know, this is Ocarina of Time that we're talking about here....

You have to remember that they didn't have time to cut out a lot of things in order to get it out on time......

So, there was probobly some bombable room that could have been bombed. And so, the crew probobly decided that it wasn't really a problem to remove the bombs, so they didn't...... There were lots of glitches and uncut storylines left over in the games programming that no one got rid of.... And this could be one of them...

I stand by that theory...
