Umm... technically it doesn't get upgraded. In MM, maybe (but I haven't played through the whole game) but in OoT, you stick with the Kokiri Dagger the whole time until you become Adult Link.

Here's a screenshot of the complete character selection screen. As you can see, the actual Young Link doesn't return, but is instead replaced by the incarnation used in The Wind Waker, Four Swords, The Minish Cap, and Phantom Hourglass. Which makes complete sense.

And check YouTube, they have tons of videos showing the same picture (and Toon Link, as it were) in action.
