Rumor: New DS model by mid-2009

More recent rumors and speculation--as Nintendo themselves has put it, concerning the Nintendo DS Lite suggest that a new model will be out by spring 2009--with double the touch power.

------

Analysts suggest that sometime next year, a new DS Lite model will be unveiled. Of course, we've seen and heard of rumors that one would be shown at E3 this past July with larger, widescreen screens to rival that of Sony's Playstation Portable and Apple's iPhone and iPod touch--as suggested by an advertisement in the more recent issues of Nintendo Power magazine. This time around, it's said that the new model will contain those widescreen touch screens, as well as the top screen gaining the ability to be touch sensitive as well.

Rumors also say that the DS will have an accelerometer built in for motion capabilities, such as that of iPhone and iPod touch, and Nintendo's own Wii Remote.

Unsurprisingly, Nintendo has simply shrugged off all this talk as just "rumor and speculation" on our part. However, as secretive as we all know Nintendo tends to be of their projects, we never know.

If they are going to make that many changes it would make sense to have it as a completely new system with backward compatibility. This is because a second touch screen means different games that can't be played on the original DS and the DS lite. This also goes for the motion sensitivity and the widescreen.

I would agree that it would probably be backwards compatible and have new features that the DS lite couldn't do. It would be cool if it had a sort of virtual console, too.

if the "new" ds lite is actually a follow up for the ds lite then it would make sense that it would be backwards compatable, as most nintendo systems are in one way or another , such as the wiis virtual console downloadable games, maybe the new ds will be able to cinnect to the wii and dowload some of the games youve already purchased on the wii.

The current DS can connect to the wii, there's just not many games that use it. Pokemon Battle Revolution uses it, but it's one of the few.

However, you can download some demos of DS games on the DS via the wii on the Nintendo Channel.

Sweet, hopefully the model is similar to the DS Compact design
