  8. Avatar: The Last Airbender

I'm an 18 year old college student taking art. I personally am so sick of how overused anime is, and how generic, bland, and annoying the style has become. I used to just throw Avatar in with that crowd, expecting nothing from it. Until my brother, an Art Director over at Radical Entertainment, showed me the first season, and now I'm hooked. In fact, I can honestly say that this is one of the coolest cartoons ever.

For those who don't know what it is, Avatar is about a world of four nations: The Fire Nation, the Earth Kingdom, The Water Tribes, and Air Nomads. Among these kingdoms are special people called 'benders', people who can 'bend' and control their respective element. The Avatar, however, has the ability to control all four elements. Like the Dalai-lama, the Avatar is reincarnated over and over again, and acts like the link between the spirit world, and the physical world. But one day, the Fire Nation waged war on all other kingdoms for total conquest. For 100 years, the war waged, and with no sign of the Avatar. But one day, a young waterbending girl named Kitara, and her brother Sokka discover the new Avatar: A young airbender boy named Aang, who has been frozen in the ice for 100 years. When he wakes up, he learns that all the airbenders have been wiped out by the Fire Nation, and now he's the last of his kind. Now, it's his job to set things right. Sounds kinda cool, but fairly typical, right? Wrong. That's just the setup, and the show actually ends up having some of the best writing in any cartoon.

A banished firebending prince named Zuko is on a hunt for Aang, hoping that bringing the Avatar in will restore his honor, and allow him to return to his kingdom. Being trained by his uncle Iroh, a retired general who doesn't really care for the Avatar, and would rather just live peacefully, Zuko is set on bringing Aang in.

The show's first season is really cool in the way it is written. It's more of a serialized show like Heroes than it is other cartoons. It's incredibly hard to just jump in, jump out, and jump back in anywhere, and really feel like you didn't miss anything. But seeing the show from the very beginning and going in order helps you appreciate the writing, and it amazes you how the characters grow, not only in their abilities, but in their personality too. The show is ACTUALLY funny, with well-written jokes and clever gags. The writers weren't TRYING to make it funny, it's just funny when it needs to be, and the pacing is absolutely brilliant. While the first few episodes are more stand-alone with a minorly connecting plot, the show eventually picks up and TRULY becomes interesting. The show was written FOR three seasons. It's not an experiment that they end up just adding season on season. It's a fully-written plot with a clear ending, and has actual progression. The first season is like watching Fellowship of the Ring. The second raises the bar much higher with even better writing and development. And season three will finish it in a Return of the King-type fashion.

The art is actually well thought out here. There's so much style to it. Visually, there are such gorgeous backgrounds, highly expressive characters, and great effects. Each nation has such a distinctive style to it, and it's well thought out too.

The voice-acting is excellent. They've managed to get some REALLY BIG names for the voice talent here, and it shows. And the great writing just adds to it.

But one of the best parts is the fights. This isn't like some Dragonball Z kind of crap where people are throwing 100 punches in 5 frames of animation. They actually mapped each bending style to a specific style of chinese kung-fu. Firebending is based off of Shaolin Kung Fu, waterbending is based off of Tai Chi, Earthbending is based off of Hun Gar, and Airbending is based off of Ba Gua. They may be shooting fireballs and stuff, but then they actually fight with actual martial arts. This is because they had martial artists on the team for reference. It's clear that a lot of thought actually went into the action scenes because these are some of the best action sequences you will find in any cartoon, with great pacing, really cool shots, and intense music. Oh yeah, the soundtrack is great here too.

The show deals with surprisingly dark themes for a Nickelodeon show. This is an american-anime, and the writing stays strong because of it, not being lost in translation. There are themes of bigotry, loss, and death brought up here, which is surprising, but it contrasts the rest of the show well. Aang is a 12 year old kid, and he acts like one too. Well...better, actually. But he's still a kid, and that fun of being a kid is brought alive in this show. He isn't some badass, but it's better for it. The only reason all those super-dark, bloody animes were cool in the first place is because you never saw them. But they're everywhere now, and there's nothing left in them to make them cool anymore. Avatar, though, is actually just as entertaining for adults as it is for kids, and I don't mean it in a way like how kids drag their parents to see the next crappy 3D animated movie that parents want to shoot themselves in. This is ACTUALLY well written. This is ACTUALLY interesting.

I know this explanation was long, and I know I set the bar high, but trust me, this show is JUST that good! Even if it doesn't seem like it at the start, it only gets better, and it only gets more intense. If you don't believe me, watch episodes of the first season, and watch the trailer for season 3, and you'll see just how crazy the show progresses. So do whatever you can to get ahold of Season 1, watch it from the beginning, and I assure you, once you finish the final three episodes of season 1, you'll be running to find season 2.

    CHECK THIS SHOW OUT!

Wow that is long, but your right avatar is an awsome show
