basically everyone assumes it can't be run in polynomial time, but no one has been able to prove that it isnt possible. Its one of the largest mysteries ever

They are basically a class of problems that supposedly cannot be run in polynomial time. If you can prove that an NP-Hard problem can be run in polynomial time, you can prove all NP-Hard problems can be run in polynomial time, and then you get a million dollars, and the world's technology level sky rockets
