Ships in bottles

What is the point in having a ship in a bottle? I mean it's like no use at all, and it is kind of an ugly decoration to have. Is it a sign of wealth?

Compare to this scene:

A baby in a bottle.

How the puppying puppy.

They're supposedly very hard to make; you have to build an entire model while working through the thin neck of the bottle. Having one is a way of saying that you have incredibly skilled hands (or it means that you just bought one somewhere and you want to look sophisticated).

It's a lot like a gold Medal, I guess. It says you're a really talented craftsmen.

They seem rather easy to make.

Why not make a model ship, then blow the glass around it? Hm?

For the same reason you don't go out buying one. Also, because that would probably torch the ship. Do you really think it would be easy to make? Have you taken into account that some of the pieces that need to go into the ship are bigger than the neck of the bottle, unless you twist them just right? Or that unless you have an obscenely wide array of tools at your disposal, you have to manage two or three needles for the entire bottle? Have you ever tried to build with legos, while only using chopsticks? Well, this is much harder than that.

These people I know went out and bought 'em for decorations, and they are wealthy, so...

Well they are supporting their local skilled artisans. These people might not have built the ship in a bottle, but it's obvious they have a fine taste in decor and also, an appreciation for the skill and hard work it took to make the ship in a bottle.

They sound like great people to me.

Support the artists.

Buy a premade bottle ship.

Look just like a douche.
