Retro vs Modern

So yeah, I kinda already know what the responses to this are gonna be, but to get something brewing here let's discuss what's better: Classic or Modern gaming. Simple, I don't even have to explain is. Lions could understand it, and lions are goddamn STUPID. And I'm sure none of you are lions (if you say you are I'd say you're LION HUE HUE HUE) so discuss.

Nice B)

Anyway I'm more into the classic stuff, I haven't played a game newer than Dark Souls and liked it all that much. Older games are plenty enough to keep me entertained :D

Yooooo Dark Souls is really good. It's not really that old even.

True, I tend to think of it as old I guess only because Dark Souls 2 has already happened. (also if you haven't yet you should talk to pheo about Dark Souls, he loooooves this series)

I like playing quirky indie games. They're quite modern in their approach to gaming I guess, but some of them have a distinctly nostalgic feel about them. As if they're like a marriage of modern and retro styles. So in a way both, but really it's modern.

Like, one of the better ones I played recently is 140, which I guess you could call a rhythm platformer.

I'm definitely more on the modern end of the scale. Admittedly I'm reluctant to put myself there, since my tastes aren't what I'd usually associate with 'modern' (i.e. Call of Duty, Assassin's Creed, and other AAA titles), but strictly speaking, I am.

we bros now

I have a computer capable of playing dark souls 2, but I haven't bought it yet just because I know this friday is black friday and it's probably going to be available complete with DLC for, like, ten dollars or something. Not to mention I wont have any time to play it for a month or so, but I intend to stream it when I first play it.

I've also managed to completely ignore any spoilers or even reviews of the game, so, if you'd like to keep that information from me for another month or so, I would really appreciate that.

Apparently there's a segment of the game where you catch Pokemon and fight Team Rocket?

But yeah I know very little about Dark Souls. I saw a friend playing the latest DLC, and he told me a bit of the lore, but past that I don't know what's going on in that game. Said friend has actually prepared a Dark Souls-based DnD campaign which I'll be playing in next year. I need to build my character and decide what his/her purpose will be.

This game looks like fun, also. I forgot to mention that.

On topic, I'm always hesitant to talk about anything that says "which is better, the good ol' days or modern times" or whatever. It always seems like everybody on one side of the argument thinks "everything was better back in the day," and everybody on the otherside thinks "everything was awful back in the day." Like neither side can do any wrong. There are things to like about older games and there are things to like about newer games.

All media really has to fit within a certain context, because standards change with the times. So there are some things that are good for their time, and there are some things that are good in any timeframe. That's what we mean by timeless.

But say like, Pokemon. I may hail G/S/C, but it's because I compare the quality to current gen games within time frames. So I felt that G/S/C, for its time, was better than first, third, and fourth gens. It was only until fifth gen that I felt something could compare, so I actually think that as games, they are on equal footing for their reference frames. But if you were to compare G/S/C to a good modern game without considering how good it was for its time, then of course most modern games--other Pokemon games as well--would be superior. Early Pokemon was really clunky and slow, and especially in Blue/Green, the sprites were just hilariously bad.

Another set of GBC games I praise highly are OoX; I think they're more timeless than the first couple Pokemon games. The gameplay is incredibly smooth, the graphics are still wonderful and charming, and the design of almost every aspect is top notch. So I think you could compare them to many modern games and find they're still better without historical context.

I'm still currently stuck with Seasons, and haven't gone back to in it in weeks. I go back sometimes, forget where I am and what I'm doing, and then stop. I got to some like, snake-themed place after getting the shovel, and I haven't returned since. It's less than smooth, in my experience. But put that down to my lack of enthusiasm for playing it.

(I get the feeling it's snake themed anyway, I might be wrong).

How does one define classic? My favorite game is KOTOR Which is...10 Years? 12? Ago. Bioware isn't the same company it was when it made Kotor, nor is the video game industry. Is that classic?

I like this topic because I feel I am slightly more classic but like necro said, we need some definitions for the two. Could you give like a silly arbitrary year or console to define the end of classic games

Yeah, I was thinking about it, and I play old PS1 games a bit, yet those strike me as being neither modern nor retro. Nostalgic, but nostalgia can be anything from 6 months ago to vague memories of being 3 years old (and that's like, a whole 5 years). The more the history of gaming stretches out, the less these terms will matter, and it'll just be "this generation" vs "previous generations".

I won't talk about nostalgia in this thread, because that's a whole other topic in my opinion. I mostly like to play older games because they're simpler. There is not going to be a new patch or anything to older games. There's probably not going to be an EA origin account, or a PSN account or Blizzard account for the older games either. The thing that reminded me of this thread is that I'm downloading and installing Black and White 2. I've never played the game, though I've seen the first one being played as a kid. I know that I can casually play around in this game for an hour and not have to update it, patch it, log in to an account or even have an Internet connection. Never in my life have I ever wanted to log on to social media in the middle of a game, either.

New games are fun, yeah. They are just kind of stressful, though. But I would prefer Wacraft 2 over Warcraft 3, Sims over Sims 2 or 3, etc.
