I don't typically like portables (the Oracle series had an irritating password system, and MC had an awful willian in Vaati who made the plot dull), but Phantom Hourglass was okay, and Link's Awakening is one of my favorite zelda games.

I really liked Phantom hourglass, although minish cap was very special as well.

I still think I'd go with the hourglass though...

Phantom Hourglass. The controls did it for me. And I think the dungeons (Bar the Temple of the Ocean King) were really intuitive, and the boss battles challenging but fun.
