But if Glenn Gould sits way down low and puts his face in the keys, why shouldn't I?

A violin sings, but a fiddle dances.
/
A violin has a brown neck, but a fiddle has a red neck.
(there's no difference)
I played violin on and off for a while, maybe eight years? and stayed at same skill level after the first couple of years, in part because my instructors pretty much just gave me things to try playing instead of teaching proper technique, and also because I was a kid who lacked the discipline to practice and didn't care too much about it anyway. They mostly tried to get me to play arrangements of popular music and scores from movies I hadn't seen, which wasn't great...
I didn't play at all during college, but ever since I came home for the summer, I've been idly practicing every day and working through some old exercise books. I've improved more in the past month grinding etudes and paying close attention to my technique than in maybe four years of spotty (admittedly on-and-off) instruction - it also helps that I've developed a greater appreciation for classical music since I stopped, and most (exercise-level, too) violin material is in that vein.
But man, every time I catch myself in the middle of a bad habit I think "man, why didn't they ever tell me not to do that?" and get frustrated because now I have to un-train it
big tip for self-practice: take a video of yourself playing, then watch it and you'll say "wow, THAT doesn't look right", then try to fix the thing

That's lame :< Keep trying
Also, I have had a violin for a while. I gave it to my dad because he wanted to learn how to play. He calls it the fiddle, though. I think the only difference is how far apart the strings are from the neck? If there is even any difference? Also, my dad has two of them. I will probably let him keep mine and see if I can use the less good one that he also owns.
But anyway, I dicked around with it for a while. I could only go so far with no actual instructor. So I kind of just stopped. But my friend played viola at Carnegie Hall and knows a lot about music. Actually three different people at my job are into music a lot. One of them plays brass, but his major is teaching music. My friend who plays viola is gonna give me lessons for FREEEEEEE. I'll try to pay her, though. I'm excited.

<Double45> playing some roller coaster tycoon
<Double45> i always feel sorry for all the visitors who get lost
<Double45> never to leave the park and return to their families
<Double45> "Your park has received an award for having the most confusing layout"
<Double45> most of this is just the default layout though
<Double45> so many of the guests are saying I'm lost
<Double45> or
<Double45> I want to go home!
<Double45> some of them are really mad
<Double45> lol
<Double45> you can charge people to go to the bathroom
<Double45> thats cruel
<Double45> ok I've made a restroom that costs $2.50
<Double45> lets see how it works out
<Double45> "I'm not paying that much to use SUPER RESTROOM"
<Double45> ok i lowered it to a $1
<Double45> surely after seeing it for over twice as much, just $1 is appealing
<Double45> fine, 10 cents you whiners
<Double45> ooo, dropping below 1,000 dollars
<Double45> i'm losing money
<Double45> haha
<Double45> people are going into the bathroom though
<Double45> "I'm not paying THAT much to go on Ferris Wheel 1"
<Double45> the price is $2
<Double45> entitled little shit
