tl;dr  I was the problem; are you?

otherwise, come and read my largely unnecessary essay. The (modern) problem with The Legend of Zelda is a particular consumer demographic that we refer to in academic circles as fourteen-year-olds.

Say you have a fourteen-year-old who likes (modern) Zelda for what it is - pretty much, a game about gimmicks. Every level in every game has a gimmick and a gimmick item, and the fun is in seeing how you use the gimmick item to navigate the level's gimmick and eventually fight the Gimmick Boss. Weaved through this is fantasy-setting story to give it some atmosphere (and charm, the charm is probably the best part now). As it turns out, this is a good game when it plays to its strengths, and allows for some clever and enchanting moments.

Fourteen is a pivotal age because when you're fourteen, you're self-aware enough to know what you like, but not self-aware enough not to be obsessed with what you like. Well, a full-fledged Zelda game only comes out about 1.5 times every home console generation, so all the obsessed fourteen-year-olds aren't getting enough. Enter two different but related problems: The Twilight Princess Problem and The Timeline Problem (again, these labels are nothing new in academic circles).

The Twilight Princess Problem: Starved fourteen-year-olds demand that the next game be bigger, more sprawling, and more elaborate. The gimmicks are still there, and the charm, but now they're under a layer of "trying to be everything"ness. So now you have the same basic gimmick game, but where the good parts are farther between because there's a lot of bloat. It's hard to pick out the charm. This is what scares me when they describe the next console game as "the biggest yet" et al., and when people get excited about such a thing.

The Timeline Problem: Starved fourteen-year-olds, anticipating this next game, have to squeeze as much as they can out of the games they already have in the meantime. They can re-play them, but there's only so many times one can re-play The Gimmick Game. So they turn to the fantasy-setting story, and milk all they can out of it; the issue is, there's not much there to milk. Zelda lore wasn't terribly well-integrated or thought out (except on a game-by-game basis and the occasional reference) until recently, because of the fallacy of people projecting that onto it. (The lorey way to look at it is "well, it's the legend of zelda, so it's consistent with the oral tradition of legends that the stories wouldn't fit together exactly", but I don't care about that EITHER so don't try me).

When I dislike something about a (modern) zeldo, I can usually attribute it to one of these. It's unfortunate, because when we have either of these, there's a good gimmick game in there that just wasn't treated right. A Link Between Worlds is a fine modern example of a game that avoids The Twilight Princess Problem by appealing to its own charm rather than being a sprawling everygame, and it looks like Totem Time Dressboy Legends is shaping up to be another. The charm's my favorite, and I'm kinda more excited for Totem Kids than for Wii U Skyrim. Low-profile and spinoff games solve The Timeline Problem by being insignificant in the timeline, but other than that I feel like the Big Boy Games are locked into recognizing the timeline until they eventually disregard it.

This feels like a colossal write-up but the truth is a guy like me doesn't care much about any of it and honestly I want to gag myself for trying to pretend I can have serious opinions on a dumb thing. They caught me, I'm riding the zelda train to the station, and whether it's a good game or not I enjoy the h*ck out of myself when I'm playing it and feels ok to be 14 sometimes

Man, you're even more Yuasa than I am...

A classic from the last episode of Ping Pong.

But, yeah, Yuasa's animation style is just so unique. I love it. Even if Ping Pong is just an adaption, I still feel like Yuasa really made it his own. His style really made those matches and all the metaphorical moments with Kazama climbing the mountain or Smile being a robot and all that come to life and add to the intensity and characterization of everything.

Speaking of Ping Pong though, the DVDs/Blurays were just released in English and this guy on Anime News Network gave it a review. I feel like it really talks about and sums up pretty much everything I could ever want to say about Ping Pong.

Give it a read. Makes me want to go back and re-watch it right now.

I'm nerding more and more over Masaaki Yuasa as time goes on. I'm currently contemplating a rewatch of Kemonozume, which I marathoned and didn't care for ages ago, before I was properly into Masaaki Yuasa's work, but after I'd started to notice him.

I like the range of styles the shows he directs have. Varying from more crude expressive figure-drawing like styles to the more rounded cartoony style of Happy Machine, as well as the more eccentric use of mixed media in Mind Game and Cat Soup. I only found out recently that he did Cat Soup, which for a long time, before I knew about the man himself, I liked a lot.

I feel like I've been talking about Masaaki Yuasa forever, so I've probably already mentioned the similarities between Cat Soup and Happy Machine. Both of them have very flat and mostly empty landscapes with strange architecture, creatures, and physics. Particularly the water physics. Cat Soup has a water elephant which they swim in and travel in, while Happy Machine has a large drop of water which he can swim around in. Kaiba also has strange worlds (though more detailed), and a nod toward wonderful water physics in episode 7's water tunnels.

Ping Pong I don't tend to talk about much because it's actually just a lot like it's source material, apart from the show's emphasis on symbolism and metaphorical sequences. I still maintain that Ping Pong has my favourite characterization of any anime I've watched, and the manga's author, Taiyo Matsumoto has a decent enough track record where that's concerned. Although I didn't really dig Tekkon Kinkreet, one of his. Sunny, however, is a really great manga, which I recommend to anyone who enjoyed Ping Pong's thoughtfully crafted characters. Looking forward to getting volume 5 of that one sometime soon.

Taiyo Matsumoto and Masaaki Yuasa both do good perspective abstraction, and lately I've been thinking that, when drawing it, they're just taking the human vision and putting it off centre a little. Like, if you were to consider the scene in front of you including all the objects in your periphery vision, most of the time cameras, and our eyes, only focus on an area in the middle of that range. But if you were to take the area of focus as a rectangle in the middle, and then moved that rectangle away to the far left and into your periphery, all the objects would be distorted and leaning. I feel like their trick is simply drawing the scene as it would be seen in the periphery, which gives an impression of looking at something out of the corner of your eye.
That and simply exaggerating perspective by messing around with vanishing points.

    Also posting this, probably again.

Nabe, Ganny, and myself worked together to get one of us (ended up being me) to the top of the leaderboard. It was quite a difficult battle, 'cause there were some Big Guys at the top that were almost practically a fourth of the board map, the biggest being named Jaden Smith.

It was intense, but we finally defeated Jaden in the end by working together. Best game of Agar.io by far.

Release date was announced for Steins;Gate 0's VN, which is November 19th this year in Japan. No date for the anime yet, but if it's anything like the original anime, it'll come a year or so after the VN (And hopefully come out just as amazing, if this VN, too, is fantastic).

I guess the English localization on PC and/or console must've been a decent success. This is pretty hype now, can't wait. Hopefully they're not just super teasing and won't be releasing this until 2017 or something, that'd be extremely disappointing.

Apparently, there's a French/Japanese (Like with Tsumiki no Ie/La Maison en Petits Cubes) collaboration anime being made that's being based off of a comic called Mutafukaz. Now, I'm definitely one to judge a book by its name, but this trailer is telling me to keep reading. And so does the fact that Studio 4°C is working on it. Everything they work on is animation gold. The original comic creator is directing it as well, and two of Tekkonkinkreet's staff are on it, too, those being the animation director and art director.

Although, it being slated for 2017 makes it pretty irrelevant for the time being. Still, the art style and animation look great and that's mostly the reason I watch anything. And it feels like they've got all the right people working on it, which is good.

Yeah, that's probably the case. Same with Lucas. If it makes people happy though, it's not all that bad. At least they changed a bit of it from what they showed.

Also, the poster Akiman did for Ryu's arrival:

I'm dying. Wii Fit Trainer. Pac Man eating wood. But then there's the part that it's referencing an old Street Fighter poster as well.

And it gets even better. And things make more sense, but also even more funny.

Yeah, I agree with pretty much the whole first paragraph. Chaika, Captain Earth, and Show by Rock!! have all been pretty mediocre, but still really good in some way?? Like, Chaika was really good all around... Captain Earth had amazing animation... Show by Rock!!, uh... well, it's alright. On the other hand though, we've got Space Dandy and Kekkai Sensen. Shinichiro Watanabe and Rie Matsumoto are both pretty well known to make amazing things though, so it makes sense.

Clearly, they just need good directors to go with their fantastic animation and they make gold. Easy.

And also, yeah, I looked at your MAL after I wrote that post and saw you gave it a 5 and I was like oh... heh, woops.

Eka, I don't know how often you're here, so hopefully you see this. I know you watched Akatsuki no Yona, so on a scale of 1 to 10, how Akatsuki no Yona does this look:

    http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/daily-briefs/2015-06-02/snow-white-with-the-red-hair-tv-anime-slated-for-july-6-premiere/.88813

Even the synopsis sounds exactly like it, "The story of the shōjo manga revolves around Shirayuki, a beautiful girl working as a medicine woman who has red hair, which is very rare in her country. When she is proposed and chased after by the prince of her country, she runs away, only to meet Zen, the prince of a neighboring country. Finding respect for the young man, she decides to serve at his side as his court doctor."

I don't think Su-won is the prince of the country, but it's kind of hilarious how similar it is, really. Shirayuki is older by three years though.

Looks nice though, praying for no Bones ending. I need to finish Akatsuki no Yona one of these days to have a full opinion on it. Everyone that stuck with it seemed to love it.

The good news from all of this though is they're not just getting rid of it, they plan to replace it in the future. From what the article on Siliconera suggests, we might be getting something really good.

I'd welcome this with open arms. Sounds like a bunch of really good features that would make being a Nintendo fan a much better experience. We'll have to wait and see if this really does happen though, since it's just speculation right now.

Read the article and the FAQ from Nintendo for more information:
