At first I was gonna say "ew gross, pedo manga" but after thinking about it, i can almost relate. Berserk is to you as One Piece is to me. Surprise, surprise! And while Oda, the author, is very skilled at making an incredibly well built, almost real functioning world with unique and interesting characters, he's gotta be at least a bit of a sexist. I'll give some examples, minor spoilers ahead which i'll try to keep brief.

Nami. She is the main female of the story. She is very interesting and, despite being one of the 3 weakest characters on the crew, is insanely clever and always manages to find a solution to her problems, both in general scenarios and within the context of a fight. She is honestly a very well rounded character, as is every crew member and almost every character that we spend any extended time with. But she has two major flaws IMO. The first is her appearance. Like every "pretty" girl in Oda's world, Nami suffers from unrealistically huge breasts and an impossibly small waist. For the longest time, i chalked this up to artistic style, but while the male population of this world is VASTLY unique in appearances, very few of the girls are, especially in body size/type.

None of these men look alike, and yet the female depicted here is just like Nami and the other females of the series.

Its most certainly not that Oda cant create females outside of his standard mold, it's simply that he wont.

here are two great examples! except, they aren't great examples. The lady on the left is evil, and because of that, Oda intentionally made her ugly, while the woman on the right's character, important to the story she may be, is mostly a comic relief alcoholic. In fact, we find out the second lady is an older mermaid (with her tail split into feet) but, as a joke, the men of the crew later "dont count" her as the first mermaid they've met, as it contradicts their expectations.

Also, while on the topic of female appearance, there is debate among the fan base concerning Oda's possible "transphobia." Because while trans* people are a thing in One Piece, and while many of them are amazing characters (I say that as my favorite character is the "queen" of trans* people), some of them are depicted not so fondly. Let me clarify, as there seem to be 2 types of trans* individuals featured in the comic. Newkamas, which are people who have been completely turned into the opposite gender (on a binary scale) by means of magic, essentially. And Okamas who appear to just be men in drag and, well, look like this-

while Oda, on the surface, appears to be very pro trans (He apparently based a character on a friend of his who cross dresses, and then that friend voiced the character in the anime for a while until he had to step down for personal reasons) it still begs to question, are the Okama's just a joke? and when does the joke go too far?

Anyways, thats some stuff i think about. Also, a lot of the women have tragic pasts. I mean, so do the men, but the women seem to take it next level. Slavery is a theme among at least two women, while another female is shown being kicked in the head repeatedly by her captor, and another has even been sexually assaulted by an invisible man . I unno. It's still the best story ive ever read, but it's not perfect in these regards. So yeah, Pheo, i can understand your frustrations with the story you love. while not pedophilia, Oda's depiction of women aint winning an feminist awards.

I feel like my opinion on your concerns needs a really long post, but for some reason I can't think of a longer way to tell you my opinion than this:

People are really complex and have good and bad sides to them. Liking or disliking a creative work has such a miniscule effect on what the author will ultimately think about any given thing that you can't hold yourself responsible for their opinions or actions just because you read a lot of Berserk and the author expresses his thing for little girls in said manga.

Basically, I think it's fallacious to say reading Berserk or anything that glorifies evil behavior will support that behavior; at the end of the day you're just looking at an endorsement for that person's deviant thoughts, and whether you react positively or negatively I suspect the author will just continue to like little girls all the same.

Spent the day researching and throwing together what the inside of a building/inn might look like. I'm still not sure how I feel about it. Right now I've got it like the foundation goes all the way up the first floor and all timber framing takes place on the second story and up, but I see so many different variations of that kind of architecture that I'm not sure if it would be more accurate to start the stones halfway up the ground level floor, or even just at the very base. I hate the Fire place, I hate the majority of the second floor, and I'm not comfortable enough with understanding how tudor era houses were built.

This is actually one of the largest files I've ever worked with on this computer. I'm surprised my poor dying laptop is capable of handling it. Anyways, I'd really like to look into Lightmapping and things in unity soon, and maybe include those in here since I like the way 2D lightmapping looks. Tomorrow I'll do a kitchen and a cellar. for this thing, and hopefully an outer facade. None of these are finished assets, it's all just placeholder "here's how it might look" stuff."

I know that feel. I love that feel. Unfortunately, that leaves me debating whether I want that feel more often, leading to it being somewhat diminished, or if I want to savor it in a hunger-is-the-best-spice kind of way.

Working out props. It's easy to do simple things like tables and chairs and bookcases, but I'm trying to figure out what portion of the castle should be made of wood and what should be made of stone. Its a difficult balance to strike for solid aesthetics.

Since in something like this the .png's are the actual final assets, And each asset needs to be several thousand pixels high and wide, Im avoiding taking time to actually bother rendering anything. Just figuring out what everything is and should be is enough for now. I want to do things like a smithy, and an alchemy room, and maybe a chapel? Definitely a dungeon, and a kitchen. But before I can do any of that I need to figure out how a castle is built, really.

I better update this thread with something, so here's a glimpse of what I've been working on. These are probably the laziest thumbs I've ever done, ever, but here they are:

Just some basic sketches of how some tiled 2D isometric platformer assets might work, for the unity engine. I've done/been doing some studying of the 2D engine for Unity, and I'm going to make an art asset package for sell in the unity store. I'm thinking floating castles.

Hey, around July 27, I will be on a podcast, here

    http://endoftheuniversecomics.com/

And what, pray tell should this podcast be about? Well, a few months ago there was a conference in chicago, where I was scheduled to present a paper on the development of Anime and Manga in Post war Japan, but as a result of my teacher, who set up our presentation, forgetting about the conference, I was unable to go, and I never quite finished the paper.

However, the owner and creator of this site, which primarily reviews Comics and Indy music, but also gets interviews with lots of indy comic creators, decided she was interested enough in my topic that she wanted to interview me about it. So, if you feel like seeing me stumble and sputter my way through a delightful interview, and throw down some conjecture about the formation of Manga as a thing, check it out. In the mean time, check out the rest of the site, its pretty neat, and the interviews are pretty cool.
