Try to quietly bring up the subject of homosexuality, maybe try to get his opinion on homosexuals in general. This may or may not work. He could be in denial if he is gay, and either get defensive or otherwise give an answer that he hopes will allay suspicion.

I think he sounds like he'd be more honest with you, though, and you can eventually move onto the subject of whether he's gay. You may have to hake the risk and admit to being gay yourself, so that he would feel more comfortable about admitting it himself.

It's tough. I have some friends who are gay, and one of them came from a Christian family.

I guess if you wanted to be less subtle you could sing him the song "If You Were Gay" from Avenue Q.
