You can get a GPA higher than 4.0 by taking AP classes. AP courses are graded differently, because each letter grade is worth one more point than usual: an A, which is normally worth four points, is actually worth five.

The valedictorian in my brother's graduating class in high school got a 5.0 because all his classes were AP and he got A's in all of them.
