Oh, and the players do have a reason for being on the island, so you do have an overarching goal to work towards as you look around the island and talk to NPCs.

With this, I could have it set up so that a princess has been captured by an evil wizard and held captive and point X, and you could go there because the king and queen at point Y promised to reward you for saving her, or a journal at point Z tells you that there is legendary treasure at point X, or you could puppying stumble across point X on accident. I can't predict what you people do, all I can do is make it more awesome

A combination of both. If you are worried that its nothing but aimless wandering, rest assured that I will not let that happen (unless the players want to wander aimlessly). For instance, you could find a map pointing out where a cave filled with treasure is, or some NPC might warn you about the cursed ruins in the swamp to the northeast. Stuff like that.

For reference, a Hex is 6 miles, and it takes anywhere between 2-4 hours to traverse one, so you could actually cover a lot of ground in a (game) day

The main point of Isle of Dread is that there is this uncharted isle for you to explore. you guys get a player map with just the island's outline, while i have a map with a shit ton of detail on it. And you guys explore. Its actually really awesome sounding if you ask me.

Pheo the Goose knight wouldn't happen, the slaver enslaving the party isn't a mechanic that would work because the party would kill the slaver, unless he had mind control powers or some shit. Trying to obtain slaves to sell on the slave market could actually work as a motivation in Isle of Dread, however
