  1. Interesting. I wasn't thinking incest when I saw the title. Whatevs.

I've had to deal with viruses before. I'm not that great with computers, but I can always use my laptop to google solutions. I helped a friend with a virus once, by putting Avast onto a flash drive then having her install it. We were lucky her computer booted at all that time. My old hp computer in first year wasn't so lucky. for some reason I couldn't get sound or internet on it for months, then I got a bunch of blue screens.

  2. Hugs from me too.

Do you have any friends at school you can trust? maybe a teacher. I found libraries were good for finding people I could talk to.

I grew up in an oil-rig town, so I know where you're coming from with dealing with idiots who think money is everything.

I just want to help you, and I wish I lived closer do you'd have somewhere to stay and so I could give you a real hug.

  3. I throw up food and blood on a regualr basis. Lots of stuff makes nautious. T_T.gif

Should probably get that checked out.

It's okay, Atlas. I'm in the same boat as you for that. I'm not doing too well at university, and it's because I can't get my crap together and I don't want to be here anymore, but I don't know what else to do. So if you feel lost, you're not alone.

  4. Oh for... It's Aragorn's poem! At least, the poem about him that's in Gandalf's letter at the Prancing Pony.

All that is gold does not glitter,

Not all those who wander are lost,

The old that is strong does not wither,

Deep roots are not reached by the frost.

    And so on.

I was thrown off at first because the first two words looked like two dots instead of three, which would make it 'Y' instead of 'A', but as soon as I ignored that and kept going it was obvious.

So why are you using the Quenya form for the tehtar when writing a poem in English? wouldn't it make more sense to use the modified Sindarin Tolkien used? Imma sum it up. In Quenya you put the tehtar over the preceding sound, whereas in Sindarin it's the proceeding sound. Makes it look more fluid in English, and it has to do with the structure of the language. Quenya had a ton of vowel clumps at the ends of their words, so having them on top of preceding tengwar made sense, but when a lot of that got dropped in Sindarin, they switched it over onto the following tengwar instead. By the way, this is a different mode of Sindarin tengwar from the one used in my last post, but I can teach you that one too, if you like.

Also, when you have characters with long stems like thule (th) (looks like an open 'b') if you're adding a tehta above like an 'o' or a 'u' (the curly ones), it looks better if you integrate it into the tengwa by curling the stem in the according direction, merging the two. the inscription on the ring has lots of good examples of that, though some of the letter combinations are unconventional because the language is Orcish.

As for the writing, try picking up a book on calligraphy. It helped me a lot.

Let me know if you need more pointers. I'm not perfect at this, but I have practice.

  5. Dang! How come I didn't see this thread earlier? I was learning to write in tengwar years ago when I was on my Tolkien kick.

*pulls out copy of Return of the King and notes I wrote in grade 9*

It's pretty hard to read. Don't worry, mine was like that starting out. Try angling the writing and keeping the characters even. If you have a chisel-tip pen, marker, whatever, try practicing writing the letters.

There's also more than one form of Tengwar, depending on you preference. Here's an unusual form that doesn't use Tehtar (the vowels reduced to little accents above the consonants)

    tolkien-elbereth.gif

In case you're wondering, it's the poem "A! Elbereth Gilthoniel" (It's in Fellowship of the Ring). This form's a pretty easy one to learn if you're new to Tengwar, because the vowels are usually full characters; the upper marks here are mostly marking stressed vowels.

I'll copy the poem and a translation for reference.

              A Elbereth Gilthoniel,

              O Elbereth Star-kindler

              silivren penna míriel

(white) glittering slants down sparkling like jewels

              o menel aglar elenath!

from [the] firmament [the] glory [of] the star-host!

              Na-chaered palan-díriel

              To-remote distance far-having gazed

              o galadhremmin ennorath,

              from [the] tree-tangled middle-lands,

              Fanuilos, le linnathon

Fanuilos, to thee I will chant

              nef aear, sí nef aearon!

on this side of ocean, here on this side of the Great Ocean!

Oh yeah, now to translating your post. Give me some time to do that.

  6. I visit Screwattack often enough. It's got lots of fun stuff going on, and I check Hard News just so's I'm current with the gaming world. They don't get everything, but what they show is pretty well-rounded. Good featured blogs, the Angry Video Game Nerd, all that groovy stuff.

Yeah, Atlas wasn't advertising. It's just a good site for gamers, and he wanted to mention it.

  7. yeah, nothing to be done at the moment, I think. She'll decide to like you if and when she wants to. Just be nice, just be friends for now. My boyrfriend and I were just friends for a year and a half before we started dating because I didn't see him as more than a friend and wasn't ready to risk his friendship, which I needed.

  8. Welcome! pm me if you have questions. I'm pretty new here, too, but I'd be glad to help.

A few of us also have Skype. My username's theuniverseisbig, in case you use it.

  9. That sucks, Akira. I dunno how that feels, but I hope you'll find someone else who's worth your time.

I wasn't allowed to date until grade 10, but I didn't date until I was out of high school. Had two guys seriously ask me out, but I didn't see either of them as more than friends. Some idiots I didn't know would ask me out as I was walking down the hall, but i knew they were just making fun of me. Guys I was actually interested in turned out to be gay or unavailable. But all in all, I think i wasn't ready.

Anyways, when I started dating I used to jump into relationships when there was a mutual attraction. That eventually got me into a bit of trouble, and i stopped doing that. My current relationship has been the exception, since that was a friendship that gradually grew into something more. I think it works better that way. Get to know them first.

Problem i my Mom doesn't like him, but I hope to change her mind over time.

  10. True, it's a fact of life that there are going to be jerks no matter here you go.

It's a tough decision. My mom considered homeschooling me, but she wanted me to learn the social skills and the circle of friends in school. I'm grateful because most of my best friends I met at school, but on the other hand I think I would have learned better work ethics if I'd been challenged in my schoolwork growing up, and I'm still trying to learn how to work hard in school now.

Problem is that school is so removed from the outside world, kind of like a nursery, and there are so many things about the real world I wish they would each in school. Blame John Locke and his theories leading the the idealization of children and youth as innocent and pure, and the idea that they must be shielded from the world. I think people treat adolescence as an extended childhood, and that teenagers should be given a bit more responsibility, as long as they're then held accountable for their actions. Of course, i guess I can't generalize, since there is a lot of variance. You sound very mature to me, moreso than many people I know who are my age.

I'm proud of you for standing up to your mom in that way, something I still have a hard time doing.

  11.  Yes, this thread does need more ppl. Also, if other people here want to add me on Skype my username is theuniverseisbig

  12. KANGAROO PIE !!!!!!!!!!!

WE EAT OUR NATIONAL ANIMAL DO YOU???

I might someday, but eating beaver pie sounds kinda... dirty.

  13. So true. Just be glad for the good things in life instead of complaining about the little things.  I think I've had a pretty good life up to now. the thing is, sometimes people who've never really suffered will mistake the minor discomforts in life for suffering.

Sounds like an interesting assignment. I had an assignment in me French grammar class today that was somewhat like that. Those things can either be taken trivially or seriously, depending on the person. I mean, it's just a class project, but it's an opportunity to ask questions about yourself. Sounds like you took it seriously enough.

  14. Kinda like that George Carlin quote: "Have you noticed that someone else's stuff is shit and your shit is stuff?"

I'm undecided for faith. I thought about Wicca, and it seems like that's the closest to what I believe in, but it doesn't quite fit. I'll figure itout.

But really, I say be honest with your Mom. She will still love you; you're her daughter. If it was such a big deal that she would cease to love you, she wouldn't have married your father; she would have married a catholic man.
