If I am allowed to name 3 games, I would nominate Legend of Zelda (NES), Zelda 2: The Adventure of Link (NES) and Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past.

Legend of Zelda: It's the original game of the series and, at the time, I thought had the best graphics for an NES game.

Zelda 2: The Adventure of Link: The only challenging from the series. The side-scrolling was something I liked.

Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past: At the time, it was the only decent game, after Super Mario World, on the SNES.

LoZ: A Link to the Past is probably my pick, but I'm hesitant to stand it above the rest in a franchise I thorougly enjoy.

My first Zelda game was A Link to the Past, although I remember I liked Link's Awakening much more. From all the Zelda games, I think The Wind Waker is probably my favorite. I simply loved the game's atmosphere, music, characters and sheer personality. That alone puts it above the rest for me. Tagging behind would be Majora's Mask for the same reasons, because of it's originality and weirdness. Third for me would be Link's Awakening, because of the nostalgia; I played that game repeatedly for years when I was younger.
