Is Porn Art?

So, Pheo and I were having this discussion which is the inverse of what him and Rika had been arguing about a few weeks back. Basically, we were discussing whether or not blatant pornographic material is artistic. Not stuff like artistic nudity obviously, but whether anything that calls itself porn has artistic merit.

I personally don't think this is the case. For something to be art, it needs to have meaning or theme. Porn doesn't really have either. Porn is just for looking at for personal amusement, like entertainment of a sort. Since entertainment is not strictly an art-form (video games, TV shows, etc. are certainly not considered art), porn is, by extension, not an art form in my opinion.

What does everybody else think?

I think video games and TV shows can be art, since they most definitely can have a meaning or a theme. It can be tough to define, though, since even something designed for entertainment can still have artistic qualities. It's possible for pornography to be art, but I think there would need more going for it than simply "sex ensues".

This reminds me of this quote from one of the Discworld novels, Thud!.

"Colon knew in his heart that spinning upside down around a pole wearing a costume you could floss with definitely was not Art, and being painted lying on a bed wearing nothing but a smile and a small bunch of grapes was good solid Art, but putting your finger on why this was the case was a bit tricky."

You took the words right out of my mouth, up to and including the Discworld quote.

OH SHIT HE SAID VIDEOGAMES ARE NOT CONSIDERED ART OH MAN NOW I'M GONNA HAVE TO MAKE A THREAD ABOUT WHY THEY ARE

But anyways, videogames are another subject entirely. I'm planning on writing my response to the subject of porn as art while I'm at McDonalds tonight. Arachne's quote, for all intents and purposes, is a pretty accurate description of what I plan to write, I'm just going to go into more detail.

There is artistic nude, and there are probably people who take their porn artistically.

But there's probably a majority of just "Oh hey here's a penis and a vagina and an anus and a horse AND HERE THEY HAVE SEX"

I think art is mostly defined by it's intentions. I do not believe that most porn is created to serve as art.

Yes and no.

I could show you guys a couple of videos I think are "art" and you guys could decide for yourselves.

Anything can be done and received artfully in life, because of human nature. That said, I think the point is made when you say that most pornography isn't intended as art. There's no more or less to the argument than that.
