Notice that the DS Lite only allowed half the GBA cartridge to be inserted.

What's fitting it got to do with it? I'm talking about it actually playing the games, not them fitting into the console. Would you say the same about a N64? No. Because it's meant to be that way. As long as you can play it, I don't care whether or not it fits into the console.

It's not that the GBA game paks are too long, it's that they're too thick.

Teto, to make it space conservative, they had to get rid of it.
I mean, the GBA slot took up a portion of the DS. And the DSi is supposed to be thinner, yet retain capabilities for a good battery life, two cameras, larger screens, etc.
It's not like those things can just be attached to a regular DS.
