You get the Golden axe by donating 500,000 bells to the town, then you get a fountain, you toss your axe into the fountain, it usually comes out a silver axe which you can't throw back in, but if you are lucky you get a golden axe.

That is a false statement! There is a 1/20 chance of it coming out silver, and a 1/200 chance of a golden axe coming out, all the other times it dissapears for good (source Animal Crossing Community)
