    Part 10: Sea Monk

    The_Sea_Monk.jpg

    Illustration from The Book of Days, published in 1869

    The sea monk, or sometimes monk-fish, was the name given to a sea animal found off the coast of Denmark almost certainly in 1546. At this time it was regarded to be a sea monster and described as a "fish" that looked superficially like a monk. It was mentioned and pictured in the fourth volume of Conrad Gesner's famous Historia Animalium. Gesner also referenced a similar monster found in the Firth of Forth, according to Boethius, and a sighting off the coast of Poland in 1531.

    The sea monk was subsequently popularised in Guillaume du Bartas epic poem La Sepmaine; ou, Creation du monde where the poet speaks of correspondences between land and sea.

    "Seas have (as well as skies) Sun, Moon, and Stars;

    (As well as ayre) Swallows, and Rooks, and Stares;

    (As well as earth) Vines, Roses, Nettles, Millions,

    Pinks, Gilliflowers, Mushrooms, and many millions

    of other Plants lants (more rare and strange than these)

    As very fishes living in the Seas.

    And also Rams, Calfs, Horses, Hares, and Hogs,

    Wolves, Lions, Urchins, Elephants and Dogs,

    Yea, Men and Mayds; and (which I more admire)

    The mytred Bishop and the cowled Fryer;

    Whereof, examples, (but a few years since)

    Were shew'n the Norways, and Polonian Prince."

    In the early 1850s , Danish zoologist Japetus Steenstrup suggested that the sea-monk was a giant squid, a theory more recently popularised by writer Richard Ellis. Cryptozoologist Bernard Heuvelmans[4] , believed the report was based on the discovery of an errant walrus. More recently. it has been suggested that it was an angel shark Squatina squatina, which is commonly called monkfish in English or munk in Norwegian. Other suggested suspects for the sea monk include a grey seal, a hooded seal, a monk seal, or a Jenny Hanniver.

    In Japanese mythology, the Umibōzu is a sea spirit which bears a resemblance to monk, albeit of a Buddhist rather than Christian persuasion.

    A monster called a "sea monk" also appears in some fantasy-based computer and card games, such as Lost Kingdoms II and Final Fantasy XI.

  7. Part 9: Monopod

    Nuremberg_chronicles_-_Strange_People_-_Umbrella_Foot_(XIIr).jpg

    Monopods (also skiapods, skiapodes, Monocoli) are dwarfs or dwarf-like creatures with a single, large foot extending from one thick leg centered in the middle of their body. The name Sciapodes is derived from σκιαποδες - 'shadow foots' in Greek, monocoli from μονοκωλοι - 'one legged' in Greek.

    These were first described by Pliny the Elder in Naturalis Historia. Pliny describes how travellers have reported their encounters or sights of Monopods, and he records their stories.

    Pliny remarks that they are first mentioned by Ctesias who places them in India. Pliny describes them as thus (Natural History 7:2):

    He [Ctesias] speaks also of another race of men, who are known as Monocoli, who have only one leg, but are able to leap with surprising agility. The same people are also called Sciapodae, because they are in the habit of lying on their backs, during the time of the extreme heat, and protect themselves from the sun by the shade of their feet.

    The legend of the Monopod survived into the Middle Ages. Isidore of Seville mentions this strange creature in his Etymologiae.

    C.S. Lewis revived the tale of monopods in The Voyage of the Dawn Treader.

    From the account of Pliny, monopods have one large foot in a shape that somewhat resembles a small boat or canoe, so instead of walking, they would hop from one location to another, landing with a huge thud. Another notable characteristic of the monopods was their method of sleeping. Instead of lying on their side, they would put their foot straight into the air and lie on their back. Thus the foot became a giant umbrella that could protect them from sun and rain.

    I dont think we have taco bell here in Australia.. Id like to have it.. I love taco's!

    Taco Bell's Australian franchise launched circa 1999 with a handful of stores in Sydney. There were also outlets in shopping centre food courts, "piggybacking" off existing KFC or Pizza Hut shopfronts. The venture only had moderate success, and eventually some standalone Taco Bell restaurants were 'split' to offer KFC as well. The Taco Bell dog was used in commercials with promotions such as 99 cent tacos used to encourage customers to try the chain. However, Sydneysiders never really warmed to the concept of Mexican fast food and Taco Bell disappeared in December 2003. Former Taco Bell sites were rebranded as KFC or Pizza Hut.

  18. Part 7: Zombie

    475px-Groupofzombiesjoelf.jpg

    A zombie is a reanimated corpse devoid of consciousness. In contemporary versions these are generally undead corpses, which were traditionally called "ghouls". Stories of zombies originated in the Afro-Caribbean spiritual belief system of Vodou.

    Other more macabre versions of zombies have become a staple of modern horror fiction, where they are brought back from the dead by supernatural or scientific means, and eat the flesh or brains of the living. They have very limited intelligence, and may not be under anyone's direct control. This type of zombie, often referred to as a Romero zombie after the filmmaker who defined the concept, is archetypal in modern media and culture.

    According to the tenets of Voodoo, a dead person can be revived by a bokor or Voodoo sorcerer. Zombies remain under the control of the bokor since they have no will of their own. "Zombi" is also another name of the Voodoo snake god Damballah Wedo, of Niger-Congo origin; it is akin to the Kongo word nzambi, which means "god". There also exists within the voudon tradition the zombi astral which is a human soul that is captured by a bokor and used to enhance the bokor's power.

    In 1937, while researching folklore in Haiti, Zora Neale Hurston encountered the case of Felicia Felix-Mentor, who had died and been buried in 1907 at the age of 29. Villagers believed they saw Felicia wandering the streets in a daze thirty years after her death, as well as claiming the same with several other people. Hurston pursued rumors that the affected persons were given powerful drugs, but she was unable to locate individuals willing to offer much information. She wrote:

    "What is more, if science ever gets to the bottom of Voodoo in Haiti and Africa, it will be found that some important medical secrets, still unknown to medical science, give it its power, rather than gestures of ceremony."

    Several decades later, Wade Davis, a Canadian ethnobotanist, presented a pharmacological case for zombies in two books, The Serpent and the Rainbow (1985) and Passage of Darkness: The Ethnobiology of the Haitian Zombie (1988). Davis traveled to Haiti in 1982 and, as a result of his investigations, claimed that a living person can be turned into a zombie by two special powders being entered into the blood stream (usually via a wound). The first, coup de poudre (French: 'powder strike'), induced a 'death-like' state because of tetrodotoxin (TTX), its key ingredient. Tetrodotoxin is the same lethal toxin found in the Japanese delicacy fugu, or pufferfish. At near-lethal doses (LD50= 5-8
