  1. I should look for the original Wicker Man.

Recently watched Striptease, which stars Demi Moore and apart from the dance/strip sequences is pretty mediocre. Oh, and the bouncer, who had some good lines. I found the whole premise pretty implausible: Moore's character, who used to work as a secretary for the FBI, divorces her drug-addict criminal husband and he gets custody of their 7-year-old daughter. In order to afford the legal expenses for the appeal she now has to work as a stripper. But I'm probably overthinking the plot in a movie where the main draw is seeing Demi Moore dancing while topless.

Also watched Basic Instinct last night, and I understand why it's so famous. Even in scenes where everyone's fully clothed there's this underlying sexual tension that's just as scary as it is alluring, especially in that famous scene where Catherine is being questioned by a room full of male police officers. It's that fear of being controlled by your own sexuality that makes these femme fatale stories engaging. I can't help but worry, though, about the implication that all women are manipulative bitches.

I think maybe the opposite of a neo-noir movie is a Lifetime movie.

  2. Gosh, I should check this topic more often.

I'm not surprised a lot of your previous posts were fueled by your own pain and insecurities, but I'm glad you are now strong enough to aknowledge them and are getting help. It's tough to have personal problems made worse by an inability to express them effectively with others.

    Thank you for posting this.

  3. Double posting, oh my.

I just watched Monster Brawl, which is exactly what you'd think it is. It's a movie where classic monsters fight for the championship title. Think old movie monsters, some of them made copyright-friendly like Swamp Gut and Vampire Lady. It's bad, but in a fun way. For the most part I've seen better acting in pornos, but you can just tell most of these people are having a blast (except for that blonde girl who looked bored out of her mind). There are a couple famous folks from wrestling here, like Dave Foley and Jimmy Hart (not always sure how famous, not a big wrestling fan myself). It's pretty low budget (imdb estimates 200,000 CAD), mostly using monster costumes and fake gore in lieu or digital effects, which was probably for the best. My personal favourite moment was an Animal Planet style intro for the swamp creature.

This is a show to watch with friends, drink beer (if you're of age) and laugh at the ridiculousness, the lack of continuity, the cheesy one-liners, etc.

  4. I've been curious about Terraria, so I might pick it up sometime. I still want to get into Dwarf Fortress, though.

  5. I enjoyed NHK. Maybe it's because of how I was at Uni or because of my old roommate, but I can really sympathise with the main characters. I like the zigzagging between comedy and tragedy, though makes it hard to explain the appeal to someone,

Yes, the ending didn't seem to resolve much, but it closed on a quietly hopeful note, and I'm okay with that. For me, the beginning of, say, a romance between Satou and Misaki wouldn't be right, since despite their progress I don't think either is ready for that. The relationship would probably disastrously, and they'd probably both regress to some extent. Old habits die hard. Maybe later down the road they'll be strong enough to make it work. I know the manga ended differently.

  6. I'm liking those designs. Can't wait to see more.

Oh, and Tarou was about "anthropomorphic-ized weaponry". Anyone seen Saikano? I remember it being a pretty emo version of the girl-weapon cliché, but I also remember it being pretty decent at the time.

  7. Ooh, I've wanted to see the original Wicker Man. Supposed to have some great music as well as some pretty amaazing scenes. Christopher Lee's in that one, isn't he?

Watched Unstoppable yesterday. About a runaway train carrying toxic chemicals. I don't remember getting into the suspense and drama of a movie like that in awhile, but I found myself gasping at certain parts, talking to the charaacters. Admittedly I was in a strange mood, but it was a good film.

Also watched The Devil's Rejects. Funny how I can be repulsed by the main characters and yet almost rooting for them.

  8. I occasionally download things, but it's usually when I can't buy them in the first place, or the only copies are outrageously expensive. I doubt they're going to go after someone who only downloads a couple movies or TV series per month.

Speaking of which, let's see if Ilsa: She Wolfof the SS is affordable. No new copies, used copies are about 40$, or else in a bundle that costs 150$. I'm torrenting.

  9. I thought Tarou was just pointing out how people sometimes hate certain fonts for whatever reason.

Back to Ocarina of Time. I'm on the Shadow Temple in Master Quest, which I always do last.

  10. Also, is anyone interested in adding Mii QR codes? I just started uploading celebrity Miis onto mine, and it would be great to have some Hnet members make appearances in Mario Kart races and such.

  11. I was flipping through a magazine that had Mii QR codes. I forgot that was a thing, but now I've got a bunch of them downloaded. It's kind of addicting. Got some Nintendo people's official ones, some Evangelion characters, Chuck Norris, Billy Mays, Professor Layton, Joker, and Lando.

If anyone wants mine I'll post it here and in the 3DS friend code thread.

  12. This hasn't been updated in a while. Then again, I haven't been checking the forum much.,

That's too bad, Aethix. I was kind of hoping it might stick closer to its pulpy roots, maybe a little campier a la Flash Gordon (he'll save every one of us!)

Recently watched Dr. Strangelove, which was both hilarious and disturbing.

I've also watched Hugo, which is a children's adventure-type movie with a few twists. Really enjoyable.

Also rewatched Thor yesterday. I love how in that movie it's the men wearing the ridiculous costumes and doing the fanservice, while the women wear relatively practical, non-revealing clothing.

  13. Wait, isn't Mac OS 10.7 one you have to buy for the update? Think it's only 30$ though. 10.6.8 is called Snow Loepard or something, and 10.7 is called Lion.

  14. Tingle tattoo = instant babe magnet.

But in all seriousness, be absolutely sure you're still going to want it on your body ten years down the road. The Forest Temple Medallion could probably be worked into a more ambiguous design so it doesn't date as easily.

  15. My friend who works at the library is reading that series, since it's become the new popular young adult series. From what I've heard, it's set in a future dystopia where they make kids fight each other to the death. So, kind of like Battle Royale. First book's supposed to be more action-packed, with the next two books more slow-paced and with more social commentary.

  16. I'm kind of indifferent to Arby's, but I don't think I could function without a Tim Hortons.

  17. Oh, you sultry minx, T1G.

I finally found a copy of Monster Hunter Tri. Couldn't get it in town for the longest time, then it was in the bargain bin at Wal Mart for 20$.

On the subject of Catherine, I played it on Easy and still had to work for some of those puzzles. I may have to buy that game, since I'd love to play through it again and make different choices, maybe with the puzzles on a harder setting.

  18. I like the Disney version of The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, but I didn't love it. I didn't really care for Prince Caspian, and never saw Voyage of the Dawn Treader. Ehh, 3D-ing non-3D movies can often look crappy, and for a lower-budget TV production, probably better to keep it as is. Been talking with fiance about doing a movie marathon. We're thinking a Friday the 13th marathon on that day this coming April. Just not sure how we'll manage, since he wants them all shown in one day. That's 12 movies, about 18 1/2 hours. Any suggestions on food, break times, start times, etc.?

I'm thinking some of Jay's friends are early birds and might like starting at 7:00 am, and then people can come and go as they please just in case they have work or something.

  19. I've been meaning to watch Mushishi. The person I knew who got me into Mononoke said that Mushishi was the anime equivalent of weed, while Mononoke was the anime equivalent of acid. Not sure if I agree there, but it's an interesting analogy.
