  1. Dragon Ball Super is set before GT, and some small details in the new movies leading into this show, like Pilaf and the gang's age, contradict GT directly. I think it's safe to assume GT is being ignored for the sake of Super, and by the end of this new series GT won't even remotely appear to be canon.

  2. Ink and colored pencil Asajj Ventress fanart. One of my favorite Clone Wars-era Star Wars characters. Crappy phone photos all.

  3. You should totally try out Space Pirate Captain Harlock then, if you haven't. I've seen the movie Arcadia of My Youth and it is so good. It's a kind of Year One origin story that's not technically in the same canon as the 1978 tv series, but mostly works with it from what I understand. I still have to watch the TV series myself, but thankfully it's on Crunchyroll for whenever I get around to it.

  4. So, I just finished watching Space Adventure Cobra, and it was such a fun ride. If I had to compare the show to anything else, I'd say it's basically the early 80's precursor to space-western adventure shows like Cowboy Bebop and Space Dandy. Cobra tends toward the whacky side, but it does get serious at times. Also, the animation is pretty nice for 1982, with very little stock footage and lots of creative designs. The show's 31 episodes long and I very much recommend it to anyone interested. It's actually uploaded super-legitimately to YouTube, and also available on DVD (which is how I watched it). Also, the opening is fantastic and I will never get tired of it.

  5. Yeah, Agents of SHIELD has adequately explained how Coulson came back from the dead, although the best thing to come out of that was how it helped set up the Inhumans plot. Season 2 finale was great, btw.

Also, I bought 8 Marvel trades at Wizard World St Louis: Volumes 1-4 of Runaways (because Brian K. Vaughn is a god-tier writer and I'm a sucker for teenage superhero stories), the first two volumes of Remender's Captain America as well as Waid's Daredevil. I'm gonna enjoy this.

  6. Here's one of my favorite scenes from Macross 7. To give the bare minimum amount of context, Macross 7 is the sequel to Super Dimension Fortress Macross, and is about a rock band that fights space vampires by piloting mecha that weaponize the power of Song Energy. It's kinda strange.

  7. Whoa, I completely forgot about that episode of SHIELD. I guess that makes the Mar-Vell thing less jarring.

Also, that actor looks like such a nerd. I dig it.

  8. Whoa. I guess we'll get some more backstory on what happened to him for the eventual Captain Marvel movie. Interesting how the most interesting parts of Agents of SHIELD are the bits least connected with the main SHIELD storyline/conflict, like this whole Inhumans plot going on.

  9. I'm kind of neutral to this look for The Joker. I think 'Damaged' is too much, but I don't mind the other tattoos at all. As for the teeth, if that's just a metallic grill for the sake of looking cool, I don't like it. But, if the explanation for the metal teeth is that they're the result of the Joker repeatedly having his front teeth knocked out by Batman over the years, then I really like the detail. I don't know if that's the case, though, so I'll hold back judgement there. I'm still very interested in what Leto's performance will be like despite the questionable character design. I wouldn't say the look is complete schwarbage (yet), but it might be.

  10. Gotham has been alright in my book. It had an interesting storyline developing with the cold war between Maroni and Falcone, with Penguin and Fish as wild cards, but then they resolved a lot of that drama, and I haven't been as invested since. I'm sure the possibility of a gang war will become relevant again eventually. On the plus side, I think the show's Gordon is good, Penguin is good, and Harvey Bullock is great. I'd say Gotham has been the weakest of the comic-book TV shows I've been watching these last couple seasons, but it's still enjoyable.

I also doubt we'll ever see a more adult Bruce Wayne or actual Batman by the end of the season, or even the series, although I would be pleasantly surprised if the show did jump forward in time enough to do so by the time it's over. Admittedly, I have no idea where the show is actually going at this point, so anything could happen.

  11. And I fall deeper down the bottomless hole that is fan-art. Here's an ink and watercolor picture of Bruno Buccellati from part 5 of Jojo's Bizarre Adventure. I loved his design the moment I saw it in the new All-Star Battle game last year, and now that I've ready a bunch of part 5, Sticky Fingers is definitely one of my favorite stands. I wanted to draw him for a while now, but only got around to it late last night on the whimiest of whims. Worked on this for a little over 2 hours, from about 10:30 to 12:30, and I'd say it turned out way better than it had any right to. If I have a major problem with it, it's that it's not my finest line work and I didn't take the time to get the anatomy as good as I could have, but I was on a roll at the time and couldn't stop long enough to think about such things. The pose of the hands is a bit dainty for such a tough dude, but I've seen A LOT of dainty poses in my art history class this semester, and I suspect that leaked a bit into this. Although, I do think the zipper effect on the page is pretty easy to read, and that counts as a big success in my book. I would have liked to do a more dynamic pose (and do Araki proud) but I'll settle for what I got for now.

Again, done with a 12-pack of Pentalic watercolor pencils, and also some Yasutomo ink, sharpie, and a micron pen.

  12. Maybe I should rename this thread "Agent's Kamen Rider Fan-Art" and stop pretending like I might post a thoughtful, carefully crafted masterpiece here one day. Fine art is for losers anyway! I've got men in tight rubber suits riding motorcycles and making sparks fly off the monster of the week with their foam swords! Truly this is what's best in life.

First of all, here's the second form of the angriest secondary Rider, Accel from Kamen Rider W. Quality watercolor pencils feel so good to use. Pretty quick experiment so my lines aren't so hot, but I'm super happy with how the watercolor turned out for how little experience I have. Made this a couple days ago.

Next, the two main characters of the same show, who are each half of the titular Kamen Rider W, Philip (left) and Shotaro (right). Was experimenting with using a brush and ink for both the linework and shading because I've been reading a lot of Gundam The Origin lately and am super jelly of Yoshikazu Yasuhiko, and feel like letting my arcane weeaboo energies loose sometimes. I really like how Shotaro turned out, who I drew first, but feel like I could have done a lot better with Philip. To be fair, his hair is kinda crazy to draw in any medium. Drawn a couple weeks ago.

And finally, a portrait of Mitsuzane "Micchy" Kureshima from Kamen Rider Gaim. Just drew and painted this for about 45 minutes today from a screenshot I took right beforehand. Again, these Pentalic watercolor pencils are amazing. Now if only my cell phone camera would focus a bit better...

  13. The Petshop fight is definitely one of the high points of Stardust Crusaders. The anime has been so faithful I'm sure they'll nail it.

Meanwhile, Gundam Reconguista in G ended a little over a week ago, and it ended up a kind of beautiful mess. I loved it, but at the same time the logical leaps in character motivation, alongside the odd pacing and tons of juicy plot details left unexplored detracted a lot. It felt very much like a 50 episode Yoshiyuki Tomino series was rather inelegantly cut down to 26 episodes at the last minute. Individual episodes could be great, but the series as a whole doesn't quite work. On the plus side, the animation was gorgeous, the characters were fun, the mechanical and character designs were interesting, the fight choreography the best in the last 20 years of the franchise, and all of the little quirks associated with Tomino's directing style were very much present. It was nice when Yoshiuki Tomino's final Gundam show was the wonderful Turn A Gundam, but now that G-Reco's out I hope he can follow it up with an OVA, movie, or anything really to leave on a better than mediocre, if pretty fun, note.

Speaking of Turn A Gundam, it is finally getting an English DVD release, with part 1 going on sale via Rightstuf in June, containing the first 25 episodes subtitled in English. I would have liked to have a dub (especially if they got Scott McNeil to play Gym Gingham like in the Musou games) but I'm just glad I can eventually own it at all.

  14. After I finish Vento Aureo, Getter is next on my to-read list. I'm not mentally prepared, but I don't think it's possible to be fully ready for Getter Robo.
