  1. Yeah, I'd go with Ocarina of Time, then Majora's Mask and Wind Waker. Link to the Past is also a great introduction if you're already into more retro titles.

As for Metroid, the first one i played is Super Metroid and it's by far my favourite. It's the closest thing to a perfect game I can think of. The opening cutscene in Super Metroid tells you all you need to know about the story up until that point, so there's no need to start with the original NES game (which can be frustrating at times) or the GB game (which wasn't as good).

The Metroid Prime series is also a good start if you enjoy first person shooters, and the storyline for that series is independent of the original three games ( I think the Prime series takes place between Metroid and Return of Samus).

  2. Oh man, just started reading this thread. Why can't we all just be friends?

I need to check the lobby more often to make sure I welcome more members. I may be able to convince one of my co-workers, who's pretty into Zelda, into joining the forum. Just not sure if he's much of a forum person.

Also, I'm kind of flattered you think I've been here for longer, Chimetals.

  3. Probably not the best to discuss Phantom, but I'll just quickly reply to that business.

I gre up listening to the Original Broadwat Cast and to some extent the Canadian Cast. I hated the film version of Phantom of the Opera, but I enjoyed the 25th anniversary concert, which I watched last week. It's too bad the chandelier didn't fall in that version, but it's still a really stunning production, and a good one to show someone who's never seen it on stage. I'm still figuring out how I feel about some parts of it, though. I get picky since I've heard/seen a few different performances and it's tough to pick a favourite. Michael Crawford plays the Phantom more maniacal and aloof, Colm Wilkinson is more physical, but pitiful near the end, and Ramin Karimloo has a wonderful flexibility with his voice that really makes certain scenes work better than anyone else. I guess what I find intriguing about the Phantom is how he's at once repulsive, frightening and alluring.

  4. Well, I can't afford to go to Vancouver, especially on such short notice. I'm surprised they're playing both Vancouver and Seattle but not Chicago. That's a shame, because I'd love to have all you Illinoisians meet up for something like that.

  5. Well, if they're just burning a Canadian flag there's no problem. That's seen as the only honourable way to dispose of a flag here. Spitting on it's another matter, of course. It would depend on the reason for me. If it's during a riot over a sporting event, I'd be pissed, but as a legitimate political demonstration I can understand it.

Desecrating a flag is a very symbolic gesture, but I guess it depends on what you think said flag symbolises. In the case of aborigines burning the Australian flag, the flag probably represents colonialism, and considering that it took Australia until the late 90s to stop claiming its current sovereignty as terra nullius, there are some serious issues there. I really don't know much about the situation there, but from what I've heard it seems pretty heated when it comes to land rights. It's pretty confusing here, too, since treaties were only signed in some places, and any action to reconcile broken treaties is glacial at best. The main times I've really seen anything significant done was during the Oka Crisis and the apologies for the residential schools.

  6. Yeah, Link was a bit of a jerk in the cartoon series, but that show's a guilty pleasure of mine. Actually, I think doing an Hnet stream of it with commentary could be entertaining. Possible drinking game for those of age: every time you hear an "Excuuuse me, princess", or whenever they almost kiss, but then something interrupts them.

  7. I still hold that the smoothest and most intuitive motion controls I've ever experienced were in Metroid Prime 3, but I still love what they did with Skyward Sword. I agree that we still have a ways to go, but at least that technology isn't being abandoned as soon as its initial gimmick appeal has worn off, at least non on Nintendo's part.

I'd like to see a full virtual reality game, but I just can't see that being a big thing in north america. That would be something to test in arcades, most of which are shutting down, and it would probably cost way too much for the average consumer to get in on. The cheapest I can think of would be something akin to the cameras on the Kinect with mo-cap tags to put on the player's hands, elbows, feet, etc., but that carries the unfortunate disadvantage of looking like a dork and/or Andy Serkis.

  8. Still need to see Arrietty. But yeah, both Howl's Moving Castle and The Borrowers have book sequels that could be adapted. Or Ghibli could do their own thing, and while I generally frown on that I'd trust Ghibli to pull it off better than most studios.

  9. More in the art threads would be nice. Speaking of which, if I get back into beading I should start posting more of my stuff. Last time I tested the macro settings on my phone camera I got decent results.

But back to the Tim Burton thing, sometimes he's okay, but his films can be seriously flawed. I didn't mind Charlie and the Chocolate Factory so some extent. Some parts in the TB version were closer to the book, like the Oompa-Loompa songs, and the factory itself looked more like how I imagined it. (e.g. The chocolate waterfall actually looks like chocolate and not brown water). But overall I liked Gene Wilder's Wonka better than Johnny Depp's version, which annoyed me because it was all "Look at me! I'm so quirky and craaaazy!"

The Nightmare Before Christmas was just as a Henry Selick project, but people seem to forget that because of the way it's been promoted. Selick directed it, and co-wrote it with Tim Burton who produced it, but it's constantly touted as Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas. Not saying Selick is anywhere close to perfect, but watch Coraline and just try telling me he had less to do with Nightmare than Tim Burton did.

I enjoyed Sweeney Todd for the most part. As much as Sondheim scores are difficult, I thought most of the cast handled it pretty well (though the smaller cast roles like Johanna and Tobias really stood out for me). However Mrs. Lovett should have been played by someone with a better singing ability than Helena Bonham Carter. I think Burton's nepotism and wanting to see his wife in yet another corseted crazy role got in the way of that.

If anything Alice In Wonderland should have worked because Tim Burton's good at making visually stunning works that don't make a lot of sense, and Alice's world is supposed to be chaotic and nonsensical, more about individual scenes than any overall story arc. If they hadn't tried to tie everything into an epic storyline it might have been fine.

I think my annoyance with Tim Burton is that I've seen him do good stuff sometimes, but it's when he gets too seIf-indulgent that I can't stand him

  10. I'm glad that you're back, YLA, and that you played through SS despite your initial reaction.

The controls sometimes need adjusting, and there's a little bit of lag between your movement and when Link swings his sword. Luckily the game usually gives you that extra fraction of a second to make up for it.

As for the puzzles, they were fine for me.

There's a light shining directly through the fan to bring attention to it. After being able to shoot through grates and iron bars It seemed like the obvious solution. I'm really not one to talk though, since there was a part in the first dungeon where I couldn't find something I needed to proceed.

  11. Yeah, getting pretty sick of Tim Burton movies tbh. Part of it's because Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter have to be in EVERYTHING he's directly involved in so they can be oh so quirky. They should just have a threesome and get it over with.

  12. Movie looks like fun, but I'm not sure if it'll be entertaining for more than a few minutes. Guess we'll find out.

  13. Fair enough. I was thinking of getting into blogging for the occasional thing. but I should just start writing and posting in a thread.

  14. Oh, right. I think I must have been tired or something. Out of curiosity, how much does the blogger add-on cost per month? Yeah, I'm not sure if too many people here would use it or not.

  15. I haven't explored too much yet, Tappy, but so far I really like it. At first I was confused by the news bar replacing the recent topics, but since the latter's just underneath it there's no problem, and having the News posted more conveniently will be useful. Most of the other changes are more subtle, but look fine to me.

I still would love to eventually see a sub-part of the site devoted to blogging. It would encourage more user-based content such as reviews, artwork, stories, etc. and keep it organised. I think I heard there was something like that before on Hnet.

However, I understand that it would be tough to maintain, and it would have to somehow integrate into the forum or else it would just die like it did before.

EDIT: Trying to add a comment to the status updates, and it's not working. Also, I'd love for the 'view all status updates' option to be back. Maybe you're just working on it now, though.

  16. I like this. The wings are beautiful, and I enjoy the details like the cracks in the concrete. The only thing that bugs me is that the right foot seems a bit awkward. Could just be my dance training telling me "Ack! Sickled feet are the antichrist!" ...I should probably leave that sort of critique to the real artists on this forum.

  17. I like purple too, as does my fiance. Been trying to find him a plain purple shirt, but it's hard to find in size 2XL.

  18. Okay, watched up to the 20-minute mark where you said you were about to talk about Skyward Sword. I'm really enjoying it so far, and definitely got some good laughs out of it.

  19. I remember seeing a few episodes a couple years back, and it seemed like fun. I think people only hate on them because they don't like how certain songs are covered.

But yeah, as someone raised on musicals I wholeheartedly agree that there should be more spontaneous bursting into song in real life.
