Posted 2 Mar 2010 I wasn't even aware that this was happening in America. Doesn't seem to be in Canada. I understand if some people don't want to be hugged if, say, they don't like physical contact. Then you just say so. but seriously, putting a ban on it? You ever notice when these kinds of extremist policies are brought about, the retaliation is much worse? The suppression of everything natural of the 1950s gave birth to the radical swing in the opposite direction in the 60s. I read an article in Macleans (Canadian magazine) about how drinking, drugs, sex, and general adolescent tomfoolery had gone down over the past years. You know why? Because those things are more accepted and people have more freedom to do them. When it's no longer a rebellious reaction to oppression, people will for the most part find less appeal for those things, and probably be responsible about them. I guess what I'm getting at it that banning hugs can do a lot more harm than good, because it will most likely result in further extremes of rebellion. Besides, I would think that schools would want to increase face-to-face interaction in this day and age. Most of the people I talk to on a daily basis I talk to through digital means, and I think suppression of true interpersonal interaction, especially through a person's developing years, will create more social problems in the long run.
