  1. Finished Season 4 of Big Bang Theory. Also watched National Treasure for the first time a couple days ago. It was fun. Like a treasure hunt, Indiana Jones-y wild goose but without as many colonialist implications and more about American founding fathers history.

Also watched Ronin, a late 90s action crime film with Robert De Niro, Jean Reno, Sean Bean and Natascha McElhone. Really enjoyable.

  2. Not sure about giving out my phone number, but my Skype username is theuniverseisbig if anyone wants to add me. I might buy some credits to Skype out to numbers here.

  3. I didn't like them when they came out. I think it was because of my obsession with the books, and it felt like the first two movies talked down to its audience, which I never felt the books did. Maybe I need to reread the books now that I'm older.

Got season 4 of Big Bang Theory and watching it right now. I liked George Takei's cameo a couple episodes ago.

  4. I watched Phantom Menace once when it first came out in theatres. I don't really remember much about it. I should watched all six together at some point. I've seen IV-VI a lot, but I and III only once. Never seen Attack of the Clones.

I remember the BBC Narnia movies. We used to have taped copies of them, and my sister loved them. Again, haven't watched them in a long time. I wasn't too keen on the books tbh.

  5. It would be cool to have some Hnet members' phone numbers, but I'd be afraid of the long-distance charges. I could add them on Skype though. Also, other Canadian members might be able to text me.

  6. Students actually get laptops from the schools where you live? That's kinda cool.

  7. Good clip, T1G. Parts of Abenobashi get pretty crazy, and that's the episode that parodies a lot of Hollywood. Also, you can watch the show in English or Japanese, because both are well done. Also, the English voice cast obvously had a lot of fun with it. I'd show you the outtakes, but it would be even more confusing.

So I'll show you a clip from the Kung Fu Episode.

  8. Yeah, just fixed the clock on my computer. This are isn't affected by daylight savings time. We don't change clocks, we change time zones, but computers and cell phones can't figure that out.

  9. I still can't find any Big Bang Theory past season three. Probably have to order off Amazon

I keep catching The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly right at the end. Never watched it the full way through, just the final showdown over and over. No real complaint, because that part's amazing.

  10. The greyscale girl glances at the screen and nods with approval.

This way, she mouths, and the screen floats towards her, echoing her silent words.

  11. Sounds like a good day to me.

I think maybe people should stop pigeonholing themselves as "straight" or "gay" or "bi". People change all the time, and their tastes change accordingly. Love shouldn't be dependent on sex or gender. It's just like tastes in music; you might like one band or genre now, but in five years that might change. Some people will listen to country music their whole lives, but others will be constantly changing musical styles and bands. It doesn't mean either one is out of touch with themselves or their tastes.

  12. Funny, I just recently watched that one, too. Was going to post about it at first, but decided against it.

I watched the redux, so it was pretty long, but I loved it. I felt like I was on drugs or losing my mind watching it, which was probably what the director intended.

  13. I don't know. I mean, qualifying for certain perks because of your minority status is a bit unfair, but at the same time, it's a way to recognise that there are legitimate issues you probably have to deal with on a daily basis that most other people don't. Example: there are some pretty good First Nations scholarships at my school, and I hear people complaining about that. But on the other hand, for various reasons not a lot of First Nations kids graduate, much less pursue post-secondary education, and if they do, money's a pretty big issue there. Scholarships give them more of a fighting chance.

On the other hand, I think some PCness does get out of hand. The whole point of using politically correct terms is to be able to openly discuss sensitive issues without offending the other party, and if it's gotten to the point of walking on eggshells for a lot of people, it kind of defeats the purpose. I know some people use the term "oriental" even though I know it's considered a bit offensive now, and they do it out of ignorance, not out of spite. Or, as a personal example, I discovered that some people are offended by the term "aboriginal".

  14. Because for some reason we don't have one, or else it's been buried. Discuss movies or TV shows you're watching or are interested in here.

I'll start off with two I've seen recently:

I watched The Thing (2011) the other night, which I wasn't expecting much from, but turned out better than I expected. This is a prequel, and while I'll admit I haven't seen the original, Jay has and he said it tied in pretty well with the John Carpenter film.

Yesterday I watched The Machine Girl (2008), a japanese gore film that's pretty inventive in its gratuitous violence (not to give too much away, but it gave me a new perspective on the sushi I serve). Sometimes the movie drags, like near the middle when they're trying to establish more plot and drama, which would be fine if the focus hadn't already been established by a schoolgirl with a frickin' machine gun on her arm. But it's bloody fun where it counts, and some scenes are pretty hard to forget.

Movies I'm looking forward to/interested in: The Avengers (obviously), The Hobbit, Prometheus, The Cabin in the Woods, and oddly enough Goon, which could either be funny or stupid.

  15. Whoa, look at that drama. I ain't touching that.

On another non-anime note, just watched The Machine Girl, which is a Japanese gore/exploitation film, which was pretty fun. That's a movie with oodles of GIFable moments, Teto. Especially the woman with the drill bra. I could watch that thing spin, and spin, and spin...

  16. It is good to see you, Jared. Pretty sure I saw Fort posting new threads, too. All these Hnet members coming out of the woodwork, yay.

  17. Man, I've been waiting to find a copy of Mononoke on DVD, but it's no longer being distributed in NA.

I would definitely recommend Welcome to the NHK. It's a true slice-of-life show with a healthy blend of comedy and seriousness that really examines the phenomenon of hikikomori. If I could, I'd get everyone here to watch it.

  18. After a few minutes of watching from the shadows, a young woman decides to make her appearance. Everything about her, from her plain industrial-era dress to her skin and fair curly hair, appears to be drained of colour. With trepidation she approaches the group forming in the center of the room.

An auditorium? She mouths the words. Just then a projector crackles to life in the back of the room, its corresponding screen unfurling in the front. Words, emblazoned onto the projector screen, white on black, state plainly, "An auditorium?"

She gasps, her pale hand delicately covering her mouth. Slowly, she gets over the shock, and turns to address the crowd. Her mouth moves for several seconds, as she greets everyone in turn with much deliberation. Smiling, she goes into a speech with much gesticulation. Finally the projector translates:

    "It's nice to meet you."

  19. I know, sexual harassment in online gaming comes as no surprise, and that is of no credit to gaming culture as a whole. But sometimes it gets bad enough and public enough that people have no choice but to sit up and take notice.

I don't even know what to say to this right now. Maybe I will in the morning.

  20. I thought the whole thing was that they were really in a Matrix within another Matrix, which is the only way Neo could do certain things outside the Matrix. I dunno, it's been awhile since I watched any of those.

Don't worry, iwasaninja, I have the same problem. More people around me remember me for some reason, and it's usually through my parents, work, school, or one of several extracurriculars. I can never keep straight where I know people from. There's something wrong with me.

  21. I'm even later to the party, like the guy who shows up when everyone's throwing up.

Anyway, welcome. I'm looking forward to hearing more from you.

  22. The whole getting up early thing can be good for that, if you're a morning person.

I'm hardly the paragon of organisation, but I did used to juggle a lot of extra-curriculars. What I find what works best for me is to write up a list of things to do, sort them into categories, and alternate between them. Also, give yourself some free time in between. Most of this is supposed to be fun, right?

    Here's an example:

    Read:

    Games:

    FIFA,

    Skyrim

    Uncharted

    Sonic Generations

    Skyward Sword

    Brawl

    New Super Mario Bros.

    Super Mario Galaxy 2

    play old games through emulation

    Minecraft

    TF2

    Valve games

    Shows:

    Friends

    Family Guy

    How I Met Your Mother

    The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air

    One Piece

    Bleach

    Learn to program with Java

In your case, I'd also single out the more time-consuming things and break them into chunks. Playing Skyrim and watching shows like Bleach and One Piece are going to take a really long time (honestly I haven't gotten into any of those for precisely that reason). Any long-running series I've gotten through, I tend to watch one or two episodes per day, usually while having breakfast or dinner.

Also, I understand that some of the long-running anime have a lot of filler episodes. Are you so determined because your friends watch those shows? Ask them which episodes to skip and save you the trouble. If I'd known better I would have skipped entire story arcs when I watched Ranma 1/2 a few years ago.

Come to think of it, I should do up a list of games I need to work on.
